Preparing the Intern
- Encourage Students to contact Career Services & Student Employment for assistance in locating internships.
- Determine if the work experience, done in conjunction with academic requirements, warrants credit.
- Assist students in defining learning objectives, developing a proposed plan of study and assigning academic requirements of the internship. Student may be required to complete an Internship Learning Agreement.
- Assess the internship for appropriate credit-earning quality. Assure that the Site Supervisor is qualified to oversee the internship.
- Determine the eligibility of the student intern (GPA, prerequisites, etc..).
Supervising the Intern
- Arrange to contact the intern through meetings, telephone calls or emails to review the student’s progress in accomplishing the learning objectives.
- Act as a resource person or consultant to the intern for any special problems or work-related issues.
- The intern may be evaluated on the following items: performance at the internship site, ability to reach learning objectives, written work or other cumulative projects (portfolio, journal, papers etc.) and other criteria as determined by the department. Performance evaluations from the Student and Site Supervisor may be collected and used to determine the intern’s grade.
Conferring with the Internship Site
- Coordinators may contact (visit or telephone call) with the Site Supervisor to determine if tasks/responsibilities, learning objectives, and the evaluation of learning experiences set for the Internship Learning Agreement are being completed.
Acting as a Liaison to the Administrative Offices
- Keep the Director of Internship Services informed of any problems with the internship site or supervisor.
Evaluating the Intern
- Verify that goals have been met and any academic projects have been completed. Assign grades or class credit.
Promoting Internships
- Promote internship opportunities with departmental students.
- Serve as resource person regarding internships for faculty and students.
- Recruit employers to offer internship opportunities.
- Review and revise departmental internship procedures as needed.
