This is an interdisciplinary study of law from social, political, philosophical, criminological, journalistic and legal perspectives.  This course will illustrate how changes in the law and changing social norms are related.  This course will be divided into several sections which will cover various aspects of this relationship.  Topics that will be discussed include the following:

• Law’s Function in the Modern World
• Race, Class, Gender and Law
• Torture and the Death Penalty

This is an interdisciplinary study of  the phenomenon of torture using historical, philosophical, legal, cultural and sociological perspectives.  This topic has gained increases importance given the admission that our government has engaged in interrogation practices that many consider torture.
