Leadership: Defined

Leadership: Defined

The Center for the Advancement of Leadership (CAL) trains UVU students to become leaders by approaching leadership development as more than simply management.

The L.E.A.D. Program focuses on four key areas of personal development: Learn, Engage, Acquire, and Discover. Together, these four areas ensure growth—both personally and professionally—while students are enrolled in our program.

Program Benefits

Upon graduation from the L.E.A.D. Program, each student receives special recognition on his or her diploma and transcript. Additionally, the CAL provides each graduate with a personal letter of recommendation.

Attaining leadership certification sets graduates apart and enables them to get ahead in their careers. Additionally, the L.E.A.D. Program engages a student in academics, student life, and in the community.

While enrolled in the L.E.A.D. Program, some CAL students are eligible to receive a housing scholarship.  These students are housed together at Ventana Student Housing.

L

Learn

Mentor Meetings — Each month during the school year, CAL students meet with a mentor to develop both professionally and personally.  Mentors often share their own experiences and expertise to help students in their lives.

Capstone Interviews — In addition to meeting with a mentor, students interview professionals within their field of study. Interviews enables students to network and understand how leadership is applied in their specific discipline.

E

Engage

Experience — Aristotle said, “You are what you repeatedly do.” To truly understand and become leaders, CAL students must apply their study of leadership by taking on a leadership role.

Often, CAL students become involved with on-campus organizations like Student Government, UVU Clubs, and UVU Service Learning; however, CAL students are free to engage in off-campus opportunities where they actively fulfill a leadership role.

A

Acquire

Theory — To gain a knowledge of leadership styles, CAL students attend workshops and seminars. CAL students are also encouraged to read books or watch webinars to gain leadership insights.  The CAL hosts its own monthly lecture series, which students are encouraged to attend.

Coursework— CAL students also complete several leadership courses which teach an academic concept of leadership. These courses include The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Principles of Leadership, and Organizational Behavior.

D

Discover

360° Evaluation — When beginning the program, each CAL student participates in a self- and peer-assessment process which identifies his or her strengths and areas for improvement.

360° Journals — While pursuing leadership certification, students keeps a monthly journal of their progress and relate their entries back to their initial 360° Evaluation. In this way, students are able to reflect on what they have learned and able to track their growth.
