Math + Service = Success
Join a math class where your entire objective is NOT to learn math. In this Learning Community you will focus on preparing to help struggling elementary school students with their math, as you earn class credit while gaining this powerful experience for providing this valuable service in the community. You will learn how to help these kids learn math through techniques taught in this class. As you apply these techniques to your math assignments you will become a much more effective tutor for these children, and YOU just might learn some math along the way.
Success with Mathematics
An Introductory Algebra and a College Success course are integrated together. You will learn how to apply critical thinking skills, time and financial management, and effective collaboration techniques to college courses with specific examples for this mathematics class. Test taking strategies, group activities, and a service learning project that answers the question why we use math will help students understand how to be successful in their studies.

Holy Math Success, Batman!
Join the dynamic duo of mathematics fundamentals and university student success as they take you on a learning community journey through MAT 0920 and CLSS 1000 to turn the bad guys of math into good guys. By bad guys, we are talking about fractions (POW!), negative signs (SOCK!), test anxiety (BIFF!), math anxiety (KA-BOOM!), and any other hurdle standing in your way of math success. Learn to transform those fears of mathematics into weapons in your mathematical arsenal, and pick up a weaponry of other college study skills to boot. Batman only wishes he could be a part of this learning community!
Writing Environmental Justice
Environmental injustice is the concept that the poor and minorities bear the brunt of environmental degradation. The objective of this Learning Community is to help students become better writers so that they can advocate for environmental causes and promote environmental justice. Geology 1010 and English 1010 are an ideal match as both courses teach problem-solving skills and the ability to approach problems from a variety of perspectives. Combined these course will present students with the practical application of solving real-world issues through educational engagement and service learning.

Art Rocks
Art History I (ARTH 2710) covers the evolution of art from prehistory through the Gothic period. Introduction to Geology (GEO 1010) covers the structure of the earth, active earth processes, and the evolution of the earth from deep prehistory through today. The ARTH 2710/GEO 1010 learning community will explore the surprising overlap between art and science. Students in this learning community will learn how artists through the ages have taken advantage of the available geologic materials to create their art, and how artists have been inspired by natural scenery and geologic events. Students will also learn about the art, the aesthetics, inherent in earth’s geologic landforms. Both of these classes count as general education distribution requirements for most majors at UVU.
The Math Side of Biology
This learning community will help students join forces to be successful in not just one, but two general education requirements. The Mat1010 class will consist of 20 students that are also taking the much larger Biology 1010 class. Take this opportunity to have more individualized help, form study groups, and get to know fellow students.
(NOTE: ENGL 1010 is a prerequisite for BIOL 1010.)

Developing the Medical Mind
The combination of CLSS 1000 and PSY 1010 provides pre-health students the opportunity to develop their own abilities to ensure success, but also to understand the psychology of the individual and the impact it has on the health of a patient. As healthcare demands greater emphasis on the mental and emotional well-being of both patients and the professionals who serve them, it becomes vital that future physicians develop skills to adapt to this new philosophy.
