The George Sutherland Archives
Mission
The Sutherland Archives at Utah Valley University serves as a central preservation resource for publications and historical records of the various offices, departments, and schools which make up the University. It also collects and preserves current and historical materials related to the histories of the nearby towns of Orem, Lindon, and Vineyard, from the "pioneer" era (mid-1840's) on up. The Archives further seeks to include current and historical materials focusing of the history of business in Utah County. Included in the collections will be the oral history and folklore projects of UVU students.Archives Collections
The Archives currently houses several small but important collections.Wilson W. Sorensen, former longtime president of the college, donated many of his college-related papers and photographs. These items provide important documentation of the remarkable history of the beginnings and development of Utah Valley University. To see a list of print materials in the Wilson W. Sorensen Collection, see our Finding Aid (pdf). You may also view the newly digitized Wilson W. Sorensen Photograph Collection.
The Archives also collects college and departmental publications such as student recruitment brochures, course catalogs, publications commemorating special events, Sequel Magazine, departmental journals and newsletters, and faculty and student publications.
We now have two exciting oral history collections as well. The first, called "The World War II Oral History Collection" is made up of ninety-nine student interviews of WWII era survivors, and is available for public use. The second collection, "The Oral History of Utah Peace Activists", is an on-going project consisting of interviews with people active in peace movements from WWII to the present. This collection is still being processed, but contact the Archivist with questions. Utah Peace Activist Oral History Project
The Oral History of Utah Peace Activists is a project that was begun in the spring of 2006. The project seeks to preserve the historical record of Utah peace activists and peace movements in Utah, including events, personalities, and motivations. It aims to provide opportunities for Utahns and others to learn about these activists and the important roles they have played, and continue to play, in our society.
