Students taking Art & Visual Communications classes in the past two semesters were eligible to have their works considered for the exhibition. Works have been selected by faculty members from five areas of concentration; graphic design, illustration, photography, painting/drawing, and sculpture/3D.

“This year's show features an eclectic mix of styles and media from students at all levels of our program,” said Marcus Vincent, director of the Woodbury Art Museum.

BFA Show 2008
February 22, 2008 - March 11, 2008

Each spring the department of Art & Visual Communications presents an exhibition of advanced students that are candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This degree imposes a higher standard rigor and expectation on its candidates in professional development of their artwork than the normal Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees. The candidates must demonstrate a level of proficiency on par with professionals in their chosen emphasis.

This year’s exhibition featured the work of Rob James, illustration; Arthur Nelson, graphic design; Brad Hoen, graphic design; Kelly Larsen, painting/drawing; and Caleb Henderson, illustration.

The exhibit featured works from the Art and Visual Communication department’s faculty members. “This exhibit is a chance for faculty members who specialize in various media to show their work.” said Woodbury Art Museum director Marcus Vincent. “As we make the transition to a university we think it is important for prospective students to check out our talented faculty.”

The DaVinci Experience
May 9 - October 4, 2008
An interactive exhibit of over 60 machines inspired by the drawings of Leonardo
Da Vinci that will allow visitors a chance to see the master's genius up close.
Many of the machines allow for a hands-on educational experience,
where children and adults can learn how Leonardo solved problems and imagined the future.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
The Da Vinci Experience is a international touring exhibit that offers patrons
a chance to understand Leonardo da Vinci in a whole new way. A collection
of over 60 working models illuminate the genius of Leonardo's mechanical
achievements. Children and adults will learn by doing as they work machines
that demonstrate principles that were central to the master's scientific
process. There is also a gallery featuring reproductions of his famous
paintings. For people interested in art, architecture, engineering,
problem-solving, flight, or warfare–the exhibit is simply a must-see.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
In 1995 the Teknoart group, a team of Florentine artisans lead by the Niccolai firm in collaboration with leading academics, physicists and historians, began to produce a series of models using material of the time: wood, cotton, brass, iron and cord. Along with the models a series of informative panels were produced by experts and include images of the original da Vinci designs.

The machines are the result of fine craftsmanship as the artisans pay particular attention to detail in order to reflect Leonardo's objectives. Each machine is designed with the aid of a computer to calculate the exact proportions of the models. At the beginning of the new millennium the Italian Government recognised the high quality and skill achieved by the Niccolai family by conferring upon them the special award "Italia che Lavora" (Italy at Work). Over the past decade a myriad of outstanding exhibitions have been held in numerous cities throughout the world, including Florence, Siena, Venice, Naples, Warsaw, Madrid, Hong Kong, Dubai, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Taipei, Vienna, and Berlin. All have been endorsed by scholars and have received official patronage by the hosting municipal councils.

This exhibit attracted over 13,000 patrons to the museum. For many, it was their first visit to the museum.

AMAZÔNIA photographs

7 November 2008 - 16 January 2009

Images in this exhibit are the work of four Brazilian photographers. They capture the immense and fragile beauty of the rain forest as well as the destruction often associated with the exploitation of its abundant resources. The exhibit is sponsored in a joint effort by the Brazilian daily newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo and by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Brazil Institute, Washington, D.C.

WOODBURY INVITATIONAL

November 7, 2008 - February 20, 2009

The invitational exhibition this year brings together a group of artists whose work represent a diversity of styles as well as artistic intent. The art works presented range from the clean aesthetic of restraint exercised in Robert Stuart’s explorations into material and simple geometric form - through the complex content laden images of Harvey Breverman - to the elaborate fantasy compositions of James C. Christensen.

Each of the artists may be said to be at the mid-career to senior status in the production of their oeuvre. As a result, there is a certain clarity of idea, form and intent that has been cultivated over years of critical thought, experimentation and earnest effort. Each artist has exhibited and published widely on a national and in some cases international level, garnering many awards and achievements along the way. The Woodbury Art Museum is grateful for the support of each of the artists and their families. It is equally a pleasure to introduce them and their works to our patrons, and the students of Utah Valley University.
