Dr. Darren Bastian is Director of percussion studies at Utah Valley University.
His responsibilities include directing the UVU Percussion Ensemble, teaching
private lessons and music curriculum courses, as well as directing the UVU
Screamin’ Green Pep Band. In each aspect of his university responsibilities, he
emphasizes quality of sound, meaningful expression, and positive energy.

Dr. Bastian’s education includes a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University
of Arizona, a Master’s of Music from the University of North Texas, and a
Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University. He has studied with three
presidents of the Percussive Arts Society: Gary Cook, Mark Ford, and Dr. Robert
Schietroma; as well as other renowned music educators such as Norman Weinberg,
Christopher Deane, Ed Soph, Paul Rennick, Ed Smith, and Mike Steinel.

In addition to Bastian’s university responsibilities, he performs as a freelance
artist and serves as a clinician or adjudicator for colleges and high schools.
Past performance experience includes the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Tucson
Chamber Orchestra, and the Sky Island Chamber Ensemble. He was a featured
soloist with the UNT Graduate Ensemble, performing at the Percussive Arts
Society Museum in Lawton, Oklahoma as well as the UNT Honors Day Convocation.
