David Margetts studied violin with Albert Shepherd, Leonard Posner, Sidney Griller, and
Vera Barstow before completing his doctoral study with Eudice Shapiro at the University
of Southern California. He retired as Professor of Music after twenty years on the faculty
of California State University, Fresno, where he performed as first violin in the CSUF
String Quartet, violinist of the Cristofori Piano Quartet, and as a member of Orpheus
Chamber Ensemble. He has soloed with the Fresno Philharmonic under Guy Taylor and
Raymond Harvey, with whom he has served as concertmaster. He has given performances
throughout California with the San Joaquin Piano Trio, and has played duo recitals
throughout California in the Margetts-Zeyen duo, including several performances of the
complete Beethoven sonata cycle. Before coming to California State University, Fresno, he
taught violin, viola and chamber music in Southern California at Chapman College,
Occidental College, and California State University, Los Angeles. He was a member of the
Roth Quartet, with which he participated in numerous Beethoven quartet cycles in the
United States, including one at Lincoln Center in New York City. He toured and recorded as
a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and with the Los Angeles Chamber
Orchestra. While in Los Angeles he was active as a recording musician in films and
television, and he served as concertmaster of orchestras such as the Orange County
Symphony, Long Beach Symphony and Pasadena Symphony.
As a clinician, he has adjudicated in numerous solo-ensemble festivals and competitions in
California and Utah. He has coached chamber music at CSU Fresno, Humboldt and ASTA
Summer Institute activities at Idyllwild, Westmont College, and University of Redlands. His
students have performed as soloists with orchestras in California. Their ASTA achievements
include first chair positions in the California All-State Honor Orchestra and first place in the
American String Teacher Solo Competition in California. They perform in first-chair and
section positions in orchestras throughout the United States.
