Audition Repertoire Requirements

Piano | Strings | Woodwinds | Brass | Voice | Percussion


 

Piano

Perform three classical pieces from memory in at least two of the following areas:

1. Selection from the Baroque Era, such as a prelude and fugue by J. S. Bach or a sonata by Scarlatti.
2. First or last movement of a Classic Period sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert.
3. Composition from either the 19th or 20th Century.

Sight-reading and major/minor scales and arpeggios will also be included.  Popular music selections or arrangements do not fulfill the requirements.

Strings

Includes Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, and Harp.

Perform two movements from contrasting genres, and two three-octave scales (one major and one minor). A sight-reading excerpt may also be included.

Woodwinds

Perform two contrasting movements from a sonata or concerto showing technique, tone and general musicianship. Contrasting etudes may be substituted.
Sight-reading and legato/staccato two-octave chromatic and major scales may also be included.

Brass

Perform two movements from contrasting genres. Major scales and a sight-reading excerpt may also be included.

Voice

Perform two to three memorized selections from the standard classical vocal literature. The selections must include at least two languages and contrasting styles. One may be an aria. A sight-reading exerpt may also be included.

Percussion

Applicants should be prepared to play at least two of the following.  More is encouraged.

1.     Snare drum solo or etude
2.     Keyboard solo or etude (2 or 4 mallets)
3.     Timpani solo or etude
4.     Demonstrate drumset ability by improvising various styles or playing a transcription

Applicants may also be asked to perform rudiments, scales, as well as sight-read on the above instruments. Applicants must bring their own sticks,
mallets, and copies of music to the audition.
