NOTE: Footnotes detail dates when sections have been updated and approved.
Summary
The standards and support levels in this document are developed and maintained by the Technology Support Committee (TSC) and ratified by the Enterprise Infrastructure Planning Committee (EIP). The TSC will regularly review and revise these standards based on emerging hardware technologies, software development, and the needs of the University.
Rationale [1]
Hardware & software standards have been established to benefit the University as a whole and are based on the current technology available combined with the current needs of the students, faculty, and staff of UVU. The primary considerations for hardware & software standards are:
- Improved levels of support
- Reduced cost of support and service
- Improved reliability and stability
- Economies-of-scale relevant to hardware and software procurement
- Skills transferability required by a mobile workforce
Standards
All desktop and laptop computers should be purchased through the Computer Shop. The approved configuarations for Windows based and Apple computers can be found here: http://www.uvu.edu/computershop/config/index.html
TSC determines approved configurations and updates these configrations as needed.
The purchase of computer desktop or laptop computers or purchase of computer parts for the purpose of assembling computer systems with ProCards is prohibited.
The minimum supported Windows hardware configuration is:
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 1 GB
2 GB RAM Memory
80 GB Hard Drive
Computers that do not meet this minimum standard should be surplused or upgraded.
NetBooks [5]
A NetBook computer is defined as any small form factor Laptop which uses the “Intel Atom” processor and has a display of smaller than 12” and greater than 4”. There is no hardware standard for this class of computer other than the following:
Netbooks will only be supported with the following software installed:
Windows XP or 7
McAfee EPO agent & related applications
Outlook
Microsoft OneNote
Microsoft Word Viewer
Microsoft Excel Viewer
Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer
Adobe Viewer
Clean Access
If additional software is installed, performance degrades below an acceptable level for these devices and is not supported.
Smart Phones and (PDAs) [19]
There is no standard for PDAs, or smart phones. Refer to the support section of this document for more details regarding these devices.
Surplused Equipment [6]
Hardware available to be reused on campus after being surplused:
Motherboards : DG33TL, and the DQ45CB or newer
Monitors: LCD
Hard drive: 80 gig or larger
Memory: DDR333 and newerHardware NOT available to be reused on campus after being surplused:
Motherboards : Intel 850??? & P3 or older
Monitors: CRT
Hard drives: 60 gig or smaller
PC800 Rambus or olderPrinters that are deemed by the Surplus shop to be in working order are available for reuse on campus.
Printers [7]HP is the standard for all printers including Inkjet, Laser b/w & color and multi-function printer/copiers. Workgroup printers must have a built in Ethernet card and be compatible with HP Web Jet Admin (version 10.1)
A recommended list of the latest printers can be found here: http://www.uvu.edu/computershop/printers/index.htmlPrinters used in computer labs must be compatible with the Print Counter system.
Peripherals & Networking [8]There are no standards established for monitors, keyboards, mice, imaging equipment, digital & web cams, USB hard drives, USB flash drives, memory cards, etc.
No wireless networking is to be installed by individuals or departments. The purchase or installation of network switches needs to be approved by the Director of Network Infrastructure.
Computers must have Clean Access installed prior to connecting to the UVU wireless network.
Network Infrastructure Fee (This is an IPC standard) [18]All computing and printing devices that have a hardwired Ethernet connection (capable of using a network port) shall be charged a one time network connectivity fee of $100 per device.
For purposes of this standard, network devices be defined to include:
• Desktop computers
• Laptops, notebooks, “netbooks” or other small form factor computer systems
• Printers, Plotters, Copiers or Scanners with network capability
• Environmental monitoring or control device
• Servers
• Cameras
• IP Phones
• Televisions
• ProjectorsThis standard does not apply to:
Connectivity of a device for use on an experimental or private network and not relying on the UVU computing network for transmission of data to/from an on/off campus source; Equipment for which a retired/unused inventory tag can be provided; (inventory tags from retired computers may be used for any new device) Devices placed on the UVU network prior to the establishment of the network connectivity fee; (proof of purchase date prior to March 2009 must be provided – new device must be tagged with an inventory tag at time of replacement)
Software [9]
A list of college licensed software available for purchase is located at: http://www.uvu.edu/procurement/computer/software.html.
College licensed software available for download to the campus community can be accessed in the "software download" channel in UVLink under the "Help" tab.Operating SystemsWindows [10]
Windows XP SP3
Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit is not our standard, but partial support for this operating system is available. We have recently begun the process of migrating to Windows 7 campus wide. All new machines should have Windows 7 by July 1, 2010. For more information, contact your area technician.

Under the description field you may add the 2 digit building number, 3 digit room number, followed by the letter of the room if applicable. (Do not add any spaces between digits).
The is no standard for the Work Group name. Leaving it as the default is recommendedStandards for these items can be found here: http://www.uvu.edu/media/standards/Computer Labs [13]
All computer labs or high density computer areas need to be approved by the Executive Infrastructure Planning Committee.
Standards review dates & process [14]Standards Exceptions & Changes [15]
It is understood that occasionally there needs to be exceptions to established standards. Standards exceptions and changes can be granted by completing the Technology Standards Exceptions/Change Form, obtaining the required signatures, and submitting it to the Business Office.
Support [16]
Fully Supported
All hardware and software that meets the campus standards will be supported by the technical staff.
The minimum supported Windows hardware configuration is:
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 1 GB
