Hearing from Alexis Jones, one of the Survivor show competitors, at a UVU leadership

Freshmen Mistake:
Taking evening classes in the winter. Then it would already be dark by the time I
was just starting classes for the day and I had a harder time staying awake.

Piece of Advice:
Watch out for how much time you give yourself between classes and where the classes
are located on campus. You don't want to be running up five flights of stairs across
campus in only ten minutes.
Greatest UVU Moment: Being part of the most incredibly epic flash mob of the school song at new student orientation.
Freshmen Mistake: Procrastinating taking a math class.
Favorite Thing about UVU: The Resources! So many resources! For everything. And Anything.

Piece of Advice: Talk to your advisor all the time! Talk to your advisor enough that they would be comfortable giving you fashion tips for your upcoming date. :) They can seriously help you out with classes and graduation (and fashion tips).
Greatest UVU Moment:
Passing in front of the international center every week to get free food!
Freshmen Mistake:
7 am classes every single day of the week.

Piece of Advice:
Remember that everybody is a student and in the same situation as you are. If you
want to succeed, grab some friends and your favorite professors and make it happen.

Not learning how to use the shuttle

Get involved! Find a club, on campus activity, or some way to get involved on campus.
It makes all the difference in how much you love school.
Greatest UVU Moment:
I managed to get a $30 parking ticket down to $5. Huzzah!
Freshmen Mistake:
In my beginning ASL class, I was signing to a classmate "my wife had 7 of the 11
kids in our family." It wasn't for a few minutes, and the extremely confused look
on her face, that I had realized what I said. I meant to say "my MOM had 7 of the
11 kids in our family". That was a train wreck and a half.
Favorite Thing about UVU:
Free popcorn at Scoops on Wednesdays.

Piece of Advice:
Don't buy the textbook until you KNOW you will be using it in class. If you have
to take the elevator on the 4th floor of the CS building, take the east one, hardly
anyone uses it. ASK QUESTIONS! Take a step out of your comfort zone, you'll be surprised
to see what's out there. Use the roofs to cut across campus. Participate in Wolverine
Wednesday! Smile :) Fight for all that you know you deserve. And most importantly,
be awesome!
Greatest UVU Moment:
When I was selected to be the Special Events Chair on UVUSA (Student Government).
I have had a blast planning events this past year!
Freshmen Mistake:
Thinking that I didn't have to go to class because the teacher didn't take attendance.
WRONG. That is how you get bad grades!
Favorite Thing about UVU:
The amount of diversity on our campus. There are people from all walks of life, and
it's great to be able to experience that!

Get involved is the best advice I could give! It's been proven that the more you
are involved in an institution, the more invested you will be in your education and
the better your grades will be. Join a club, attend activities, and have fun at UVU!
Greatest UVU Moment:
When we changed from UVSC to UVU.
Freshmen Mistake:
Signing up for classes early in the morning, even though I knew I was not a morning
person.
Favorite Thing about UVU:
UVU is very centered about helping you succeed.

Time management. Make sure you give yourself enough time to fulfill all commitments
and don't procrastinate.

Doing acts of Kindness because it’s Christmas and my positive psychology class taught
me that doing simple acts of kindness changes our behavior towards others. This class
changed my life for the better.
Freshmen Mistake:
Not getting enough sleep because I would stay up and play ping-pong and pool with
friends,

Not taking advantage of all the schools resources.

Small class sizes. Friendly atmosphere.

You mean besides microwave burritos? spending too much time in my comfort zone, and
not meeting with my academic adviser.

Orientation, of course!
