Tutorial FAQ


 

arrow bullet point What can I expect in a tutorial?

First, we’ll ask about your assignment and your concerns.  Second, we’ll read your paper aloud, focusing on global issues like ideas, content, organization, and concerns; next, we’ll focus on ideas like grammar, spelling and punctuation.

arrow bullet point What is the difference between “correcting” a paper and tutoring?

To help students become the best writers possible, we will avoid merely finding and correcting errors, and instead, discuss and apply writing principles that you are struggling with.  Writing requires time and effort, and though we can help, we cannot perfect any paper during a tutorial.

arrow bullet point What do I need to bring to my tutorial?

  • A copy of your writing
  • Your questions or concerns
  • Assignment sheet from your teacher (if applicable)
  • Desire to become a better writer

arrow bullet point What kind of assignments can I get help with?

You can bring in anything that you are writing: a class assignment, a personal writing, a resume, a scholarship essay, etc.

arrow bullet point Do I have to bring a completed draft?

Not necessarily.  We help students at any stage of the writing process—brainstorming, prewriting, drafting, revising, etc.

arrow bullet point Will the tutor assign my paper a grade?

No, tutors cannot take responsibility for, guess at, or give any grades.  However, multiple visits to the Center will increase the skills and confidence students need to earn better grades.

arrow bullet point Do I have to be present for the tutorial, or can I just drop off my paper?

Students must come in for their own tutorials.  We do not accept dropped off, emailed, or faxed papers.  Friend or family substitutes will not be tutored in place of the student.

arrow bullet point Do I have to participate in the tutorial?

Yes, students must be present for and actively engaged in the tutorial process.  Tutorials may be suspended if a student is consistently using his/her cell phone or other electronic devices, or if the student does not actively participating in the tutorial.  Please make all necessary calls and texts before or after the tutorial.

arrow bullet point If I am late to my appointment, will I still receive the full 30 or 60 minutes I signed up for?

Since there is little flexibility to the appointment schedule, students will be docked the minutes they are late.  Thus, a 30-minute tutorial might be shortened to 25 minutes.  Please note that tutorials are on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If you are more than 5 minutes late to your appointment, it will be given away to the next student in line.

arrow bullet point Do I have to be enrolled in an English class to use Writing Center services?

No, we help students working on writing in any subject and encourage students to produce high-quality work for anything they are writing.

arrow bullet point Do I have to be a UVU student to use tutoring services?

No, the Writing Center, Peer Tutoring, and Math Lab programs provide free services to UVU students, as well as members of the community.

arrow bullet point What other resources can I use?

  • UVU Library: reserve study rooms, access online research materials: journals, periodicals, books, etc.; media, paper journals, periodicals, books, computer labs, café, etc.
