Online Tutorials

Discuss your paper in an online chat with a tutor, using our Online Writing Lab (OWL) sessions.

To better serve all university students, the Writing Center provides face-to-face tutorials in the main Center, as well as OWL (Online Writing Lab) tutorials that take place in a chat room type setting.  Trained tutors work one-on-one with students to improve overall writing skills and to address specific student or instructor concerns.  Thus, students must be present for, and actively engaged in, the tutorial process.  As such, we do not accept emailed, faxed, or dropped off papers to correct.

For an OWL tutorial, simply follow these three steps:

Step One

Step One: Make an appointment to meet with a tutor online.

To make an appointment, call the Writing Center at (801) 863-8936, or drop by LI 208 to sign up at the front desk during our regular Writing Center hours.

OWL tutorials are available at specific times (see OWL Hours below), but you can call the Writing Center any time we're open to schedule your appointment.

Appointments start on the hour and last up to 55-minutes.

Spring 2014 OWL Hours:

Monday: 11 AM; 1 PM; 4 PM
Tuesday: 12 PM; 2 PM; 5 PM
Wednesday: 10 AM; 12 PM; 2 PM; 5 PM
Thursday: 12 PM; 5 PM
Friday: 11 AM; 1 PM
Saturday: N/A

(Note: All hours are in Mountain Time; hours are subject to change; closed all UVU holidays.)

Step Two

Step Two: Submit your paper at least one hour before your appointment.

Click the above link to fill in our online, electronic form with information about your class, assignment, and concerns. Copy your paper and paste it into the large box at the end of the form. Then click the Submit button.

*If you have any trouble with the form, please email the paper directly to writelab@uvu.edu. Or call us at (801) 863-8936.

If you're on a tight schedule, call us before your appointment to make sure we've received the paper. Sometimes email servers are tricky.

Note: Please submit your paper at least one hour before the start of your appointment. Please keep in mind that your appointment may be terminated if we have not received your paper at least 30-minutes prior to the start of the appointment.

Step Three

Step Three: Log in to Whiteboard for your chat-based tutorial at time of appointment.

A few minutes before your appointment, click the above link to go to Word Wide Whiteboard.

Once you're logged in, click "Join Live Class" or "Start Live Class" (If the tutorial has not begun by 5 after the hour, call us at (801) 863-8936.) (PLEASE IGNORE the note to "Join Live Tutorial" on the NetTutor homepage.)

Whiteboard uses cookies, pop-ups, and Java scripts. Once you're in the program, click the Browser Test button at the top of the page to make sure your computer is ready to run Whiteboard.

  • To allow cookies and pop-ups, go to Tools on your browser tool bar and find Options or Internet Options. Select Security (in Internet Explorer) or Content (in Firefox) and lower your security settings or choose to allow pop-ups.

  • To enable Java, go to www.java.comand click the big "Free Java Download" button.

If you have trouble, call us at (801) 863-8936 or contact Whiteboard's support team (click "Contact LSI Support" or send an email to support@nettutor.com).
