Holland, Matthew S. MS 186 |
President
Dr. Matthew S. Holland’s road to a distinguished career in higher education began as a student at Brigham Young University, where he graduated with honors and was valedictorian for the political science department in 1991. That same year he won a prestigious Raoul Wallenberg Scholarship to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to study leadership in democracies. Before earning his master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science at Duke University, Dr. Holland served with distinction as chief of staff for the top executive of the international consulting firm Monitor Group and, later, as special assistant to then-Governor Michael O. Leavitt. As a faculty member at BYU, his research in American political thought garnered national attention. In 2005-06, he was awarded Princeton University’s James Madison Fellowship. A popular teacher, his commitment to applied learning concepts led to his selection as BYU’s “Civically Engaged Scholar of the Year” by Utah Campus Compact. Most recently, Dr. Holland was selected from an exceptional pool of candidates as Utah Valley University’s sixth president. |
Archambault, Marc MS 111 |
Vice President, Development & Alumni
Marc L. Archambault was named Vice President for Development and Alumni in August 2010. He also serves as Vice Chair and Executive Director of the UVU Foundation Board, and as co-executive publisher of the UVU Magazine.
Archambault holds bachelor's degrees in Physics and English from Saint Michael's College and earned a Certificate of Fundraising Management from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Family Services, Inc. of Lafayette, Indiana and is a three-time invited speaker and panelist for Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Corporate and Foundation Relations national conferences. |
Connelly, David MS 185 |
President, Faculty Senate David has been with UVU since 2008. He is serving as the Faculty Senate Presdient and as the Department Chairein History & Political Science in the Colleged of Humanities & Socials Sciences as well as teaches as an Associate Professor. He received his Masters in Public Administration from the Romney Institute of Public Management at BYU and his Doctorate in the same field from Rockerfeller College of Public Affairs & Policy at the University at Albany. David's background is in organizational behavior and public administration. Many of his years of experience and research have been in the field of non-profit business. |
Duckworth, Cory MS 255 |
Vice President, Student Affairs
Cory L. Duckworth was appointed as Vice President for Student Affairs and Strategic Planning at Utah Valley University in August 2003. His twenty year career in higher education has focused on providing students with life enriching educational experiences. Prior to his present appointment he served as Vice President for Advancement and Marketing at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Following his graduation from the University of Utah College of Law (UT), Duckworth worked as a political science instructor at Southern Utah University (UT). At that same institution he accepted the position of Assistant Director of Development. He later worked at Minot State University (ND) as Executive Assistant to the President for Planning and Development, Director of the St. Cloud State University Foundation (MN), and Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement at UVU (UT). Throughout his career, Duckworth has initiated a wide range of strategies for the benefit of students and the academy. He has raised substantial funds from private sources in support of these efforts. He currently serves as Director of the Utah Valley Senior Executive Leadership Forum (UVSELF) and Board Director of the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority (UHEAA). He is the former chair of the UVU Strategic Directions Advisory Board and a former Board Director for Region V of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). |
Jones, David MS 194 |
Assistant Attorney General
David Jones is an Assistant Attorney General with the State of Utah Office of the Attorney General and has served as the General Counsel for Utah Valley University since 2001, providing legal counsel, advice, and representation to the University concerning all legal issues of higher education, including employment related issues, property and contracts, intellectual property, student and faculty issues, university policies, athletics, civil rights and associated litigation. He is also the Section Chief in the Utah Attorney General Office responsible for the supervision and management of the Education Section attorneys and staff.
Prior to his work with Utah Valley University and the Utah Attorney General’s Office, David worked as corporate counsel for Ford, Bacon & Davis in Salt Lake City, Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc., in Omaha, and BP Alaska in Anchorage.
David received his undergraduate degree in Political Science/Economics at the University of Missouri and his law degree from the University of Tulsa. He is an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Utah State Bar.

Makin, Linda MS 117 |
Chief Planning, Budget & Policy Officer
Linda L. Makin serves as the Chief Planning, Budget & Policy Officer at Utah Valley University. Planning & Budget organizationally resides in the Executive Division under the direction of the President and includes Planning, Budgets, Institutional Effectiveness, Institutional Research and Information, University Compliance Services, and Policy. Linda manages UVU’s Planning, Budgeting, and Assessment (PBA) process and serves as the university’s chief budget/planning officer and as the university’s policy administrator. Linda earned a master’s degree in public administration from Brigham Young University in 2007, a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Utah Valley University in 2002, and has over 29 years of higher education experience. Linda has received several awards including CFO (Chief Financial Officer) of the Year 2009 by Utah Business Magazine, 2007 UVU Board of Trustees Excellence Award, Fall 1997 PACE Distinguished Employee Award, and 1998 CCBO Regional Outstanding Business Officer. In 2010, Linda was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Utah Foundation and serves as a member of the UVU Alumni Board. |
Martin, Cameron MS 294 |
Vice President, University Relations
Dr. Cameron K. Martin is the Vice President for University Relations at Utah Valley University with responsibility for state and federal legislative affairs, economic development, community engagement, campus events, and public relations and marketing. Dr. Martin rejoined the UVU administrative team in October 2012, after working four years for the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) as the Associate Commissioner for Economic Development and Planning. While at USHE, Dr. Martin had stewardship for economic development, strategic planning, presidential searches and evaluations, policy administration, system student affairs coordination, and special projects, initiatives and events for USHE. Dr. Martin earned a baccalaureate degree in political science with a minor in gerontology and a master’s degree in public administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his Ph.D. in educational leadership at BYU with a research focus on the role and organizational value of an interim university president. Dr. Martin and his wife, Julie, are the parents of three daughters and reside in Provo, Utah. |
Olsen, Karen MS 186 |
Executive Secretary, Office of the President
Karen Olsen serves the University President as executive secretary and as the secretary to the UVU Board of Trustees. Her responsibilities include managing the affairs of the office of the President, including initiating and coordinating correspondence and communication; providing administrative support for executive level university meetings; and coordinating special events and projects. She manages the office budgets; responds to inquiries and comments from internal and external constituents, and acts as liaison for the President’s Office. She also serves as liaison to the UVU Board of Trustees, and provides administrative support for them.
Karen received an AA degree with emphasis in business education from Snow College. She has served 20+ years in administrative support to both the president and vice president for academic affairs. In addition to serving on presidential level councils, she is a member of the Commencement Committee, Emergency Preparedness Advisory Council, Job Slotting Committee, and on the staff association executive board. She coordinates the university awards of excellence and retiree recognition events at UVU, and serves the community as a member of the Mapleton City Library Board.

Palmer, Alexis MS 197 |
President, PACE
Alexis Palmer is currently serving as the Professional Association of College Employees (PACE) President-Elect at Utah Valley University. Alexis began her career at UVU in 2004 as the coordinator of the Volunteer & Service-Learning Center. She is currently the Director of the Volunteer & Service-Learning Center and also teaches as an adjunct in the University Student Success department. Prior to coming to UVU, Alexis worked for the Points of Light Foundation and SERVE Idaho (Idaho Commission for National and Community Service). Alexis received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Boise State University and her Master of Science in Youth and Family Recreation from Brigham Young University. |
Peterson, Val MS 196 |
Vice President, Finance and Administration
Dr. Val L. Peterson is VP of Administration and Legislative Affairs at Utah Valley University. The responsibilities of this position include overseeing a budget of more than 22 million dollars, administrative responsibilities for facilities, grounds, maintenance, human resources, business office, purchasing, bookstore, printing services, police department, parking services and fleet services, information technology, telephone services, and media services. He is also the government relations liaison for the University. In 2009 he was named Chief Financial Officer for Government entities by Utah Business magazine. Val started at UVU in 1987 and has served in a variety of capacities such as Associate VP for College Relations and VP for College Relations. He has a Ph. D. in Educational Leadership from BYU and holds a Masters in Strategic Studies from the United States War College. He has served in the National Guard for the past 26 years and is currently the Brigade Commander of the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade(Linguist). Originally from Idaho, Val and his wife Ann are the parents of three children. Val is very appreciative of all the support from his wife and children. He also wishes to thank the President’s Cabinet, Associate Vice Presidents and co-workers for our success in building UVU into what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. |
Reyes, Kyle MS 186 |
Assistant to the President
Dr. Kyle A. Reyes has served for the past three years as Assistant to UVU President Matthew Holland. Prior to his appointment in the President’s Office, Kyle worked at UVU for six years primarily in the development of programs and services for underrepresented students and communities (i.e. TRIO/Upward Bound, GEAR UP, Multicultural Center). In 2007, Kyle created UVU’s Latino Initiative designed to increase student achievement among the growing Latino community. For his work in community outreach, service learning, and inclusive initiatives, Kyle has received a number of awards including: Civically Engaged Staff Member Award from the Utah Campus Compact; UVU’s PACE Distinguished Employee Award; Adjunct Faculty of the Year Wolverine Achievement Award; and the Executive Division Award of Excellence. He has taught courses in Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication. He served for a brief time as Director of Student Success and Retention before his appointment to the President’s Office. Kyle currently serves on a number of community boards and the College Access Network for the Utah System of HEd. Kyle received his Ph.D. in Education Leadership and Policy from the University of Utah and was the recipient of the Elmo R. & Frances Bennion Morgan Fellowship. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and Master’s degrees in Education Leadership from Brigham Young University. He has a beautiful and talented wife and is the proud father of four boys and a girl. |
Wilson, Ian MS 194 |
Vice President, Academic Affairs
Dr. Wilson was appointed as Vice President of Academic Affairs October 2010. During his 21 year career at UVU, he has been deeply involved in administration at various levels. He served as Dean of the Woodbury School of Business from 1989 to 2001 and then again as interim dean from 2008 - 2010. He also served as Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement from 2001-2002 before being named Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Marketing, a position he held from 2002 – 2006 when he returned to teaching from two years. Prior to coming to UVU in 1989, Wilson worked at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta where he taught for twelve years and served as the program coordinator of the human resources management program and Chair of the Department of Business Administration. Wilson holds a doctorate degree in sociology from the University of Calgary, a master’s degree in organizational behavior from Brigham Young University, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from BYU. During his tenure at UVU, Wilson was instrumental in the development of the first baccalaureate degrees offered by the university as well as the current MBA program. His service has included Executive Director of the UVU Foundation, Inc., co-chair of the Strategic Directions Advisory Committee, board member and chair of the Board of Trustees at Timpanogos Regional Hospital and board member of the Provo/Orem Chamber of Commerce. |
Workman, Chad MS 220 |
Student Body President, UVUSA
Chad was born and raised in Provo, Utah where he attended Timpview High School. He was Student Body President his senior year and graduated in 2007. He decided to attend UVU and became involved in The Center for the Advancement of Leadership. In CAL he was involved in multiple leadership positions. he was also a member of Service Council and, shortly after, became involved in UVUSA where he now serves as the Student Body President. Chad plans to graduate in 2013 with a Bachelors’ Degree in Political Science with plans of obtaining an MPA. He recently proposed to fellow UVU student, Jacqueline Shields, who is the girl of his dreams. They will be married on December 21, 2012. He has a passion for this university and is excited to represent UVU students on the Presidents Council this year. |
