Valerie Hart Nelson, mezzo-soprano, is a versatile artist, and enjoys performing a wide variety of operatic, musical theater, and concert repertoire. Past years, Valerie has enjoyed performing concerts including; Mozart’s Requiem with Dr. Brady Allred’s Salt Lake Choal Artists and Dr. Reed Criddle’s UVU Masterworks and Wasatch Chorale, Handel’s Isreal in Eygpt with the Salt Lake Choral Artists; Handel’s Messiah with Utah Lyric Opera and other various ensembles; Scarlatti’s Magdalena with the Cathedral of the Madeline, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival and Kayson Brown’s Lyceum Orchestra, and appearing several times as a guest artist in the Utopia Early Music Ensemble.
Mrs. Nelson has also recently performed a wide variety of Operatic and Operetta roles. Some of her favorites include; Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Madame Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, and La tasse chinoise in L’enfant et les sortileges with the Castleton Festival under the director of Maestro Lorin Maazel; Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor with Central City Opera, Dame Quickly in Falstaff, Oberon in Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas, Baba in The Medium, Katisha in The Mikado, and Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti with Florida State Opera; Buttercup in HMS Pinafore with the Rogers Theater; 2nd Lady in the condensed version of The Magic Flute with Utah Opera; The Duchess in The Gondoliers, Eulalie in The Music Man, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Ida in Die Fledermaus, and the Nanny in Robert Ward’s A Friend of Napoleon all within two seasons of Ohio Light Opera; and Hata in The Bartered Bride, and Mrs. Jones in Street Scene with the Utah Lyric Opera Ensemble. This season. Mrs. Nelson is excited to debut the title role in Carmen with Utah Vocal Arts Academy / Utah Lyric Opera.
Mrs. Nelson currently teaches as an adjunct vocal instructor at Utah Valley University.
