Physics

Alvin K. Benson served as a Professor of Physics in the Indiana University system from 1972-78, and as head of the department from 1976-78. From 1978-86, he worked in research and development for Conoco, Inc. and DuPont, as a research geophysicist (1978-81), Supervisor of Geophysics Research and Theory Group Leader (1981-84), and as a Research Associate (1984-86). From 1986 to 2001, he was a Professor of Geophysics at Brigham Young University, retiring in September 2001. He is presently a professor of physics at Utah Valley University. He has authored or coauthored over 500 research articles, three books on geophysics, one CD-ROM on geophysics, and is editor of four volumes about the greatest inventors and inventions. Among the awards he has received are the Honorary Bausch and Lomb Award, Outstanding Young Man of America Award, Alcuin Teaching and Research Award, Distinguished Leadership Award, a Citation of Meritorious Achievement in geophysical research, Professor of the Year in the BYU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Best Paper Award in the Physical Sciences from The Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters (2005), Faculty Excellence Award in the UVSC School of Science and Health (2006), UVU TRIO Instructor of the Year (2009). The focal point of his life is his family, a great wife, three wonderful daughters, three wonderful sons-in-law, and eleven super grandchildren, and his greatest joy is building 'forever' memories with them.
