In 2004, the Student Success and Retention Committee (SSRC) was organized to study the significant retention problem at UVU (at that time losing 60% of freshman in the first year). At the conclusion of that study, which included a Foundations of Excellence® survey to faculty and staff, a Title III grant proposal was written and accepted. Upon receipt of grant funds in 2006, the Office of First Year Experience & Student Retention (FYESR) was formed. We are pleased to announce that at the end of the grant period in fall 2011, UVU's retention rate had increased to 64%.


From orientation through graduation, First-Year Experience & Student Retention supports UVU students by facilitating student connections with the campus community, orchestrating cross-campus collaboration, and promoting academic achievement and a dedication to program completion.


Under the direction of the Associate Vice-President for Student Success & Retention and the Dean of University College, the Office of First-Year Experience & Student Retention coordinates and promotes campus-wide retention and graduation initiatives.
