At its core, engaged learning focuses on connecting every student to content, each other, the instructor, and the world. Students are essentially “cognitive apprentices”, novice learners in the field, who benefit from carefully crafted and guided experiences that ensure development of their skills and understanding of the world around them. Undergraduate scholarship, involving a shift from learning about content to using, applying, and discovering content both inside the classroom and outside of the classroom, is one of the most powerful methods for building the student learning outcomes that higher education promises. By closing the loop, careful classroom-based and institutional assessment helps guide the use of resources and constantly improves our ability to prepare students to function effectively in the world.
We eagerly invite you to participate at the Scholarship of Teaching & Engagement (SoTE) VI conference. Every year, SoTE brings together higher education instructors, administrators, and community members to discuss issues central to student learning, engaged teaching, and community engagement. SoTE sessions are interactive, with time for discussion and sharing of ideas that benefit all participants and that lead to innovative thinking. This year's conference focuses on how undergraduate scholarship and assessment can enrich student learning and benefit the community.
UVU is located in Orem, Utah, just over 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City. UVU sits at the feet of Mt. Timpanogos; UVU is about 30 minutes away from Sundance Ski Resort and 45 minutes away from renowned Park City, Utah.
Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Award is new to SoTE this year. Consideration for this award is optional. The top five-eight paper proposals will be selected to submit a paper to the SoTE Committee by March 1, 2014. These papers will be automatically submitted to the Journal of Applied Research in High Education (JARHE). The authors should follow the author guidelines for the journal. Information about the JARHE and author guidelines can be found under the quick links. From those top submissions, one paper will be selected for the Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Award. The winner will be recognized at the conference and will be presented with a plaque and $200 prize co-sponsored by Higher Education Teaching & Learning Association (HETL) and Emerald Publishing.
Session format changes have been made for the SoTE VI. Roundtable and small symposia have been removed. Concurrent workshops has been added as a session type. Session types available for SoTE VI include concurrent workshops, interactive discussions, panel, paper and poster. The goal of the session types is to highlight scholarship in engaged teaching and learning as well as foster dialogue and application of engaged teaching and learning practices. Descriptions of session types can be found at the Call for Proposal link under the Quick Links.
