UVU built the Capitol Reef Field Station in partnership with Capitol Reef National Park to provide students and faculty with the opportunity to study the Colorado Plateau ecosystem in an engaged learning environment. Sustainability and environmental ethics are at the forefront of that research. It is part of the mission of the program to promote sustainability through service, stewardship, teamwork, and education.
The facility began operations on October 16, 2008. It has been constructed with energy efficiency in mind and is completely solar powered. While visiting the field station, staff and guests are encouraged to practice conservation at all times. The field station has a strong policy of leave-no-trace ethics in order to protect local ecosystems.
