TRiO Upward Bound

What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound is a federally funded program. It assists high school students who will be the first generation in their family to graduate with a post-secondary degree. Upward Bound is a scholarship program which gives a monthly stipend to students that display satisfactory participation in program activities and guidelines. Academic advisors provide vocational and academic counseling as well as guidance activities which assist students in developing a variety of skills. Enrichment activities are provided regularly and are designed to provide cultural, educational, academic, and service opportunities.

The two main objectives of Upward Bound are to assist students in creating a vision of their future and to help make the transition into college easier. Upward Bound hopes to make higher education a reality for everyone who wants to secure a better future for themselves and their families.

Summer Academic Programs

Upward Bound students who have demonstrated commitment and hard work during the academic year will be selected to attend the summer academic program held every June. Summer participation helps the student become more familiar with college life by living on campus and attending classes at the college. The attending students can earn up to 7 college credits. The last week of the program is set aside for an academic expedition.

Catch the College Dream

TRIO College Prep Programs Mission Statement

The mission of the TRIO programs is to advance the idea of equal educational opportunities in postsecondary education. It is to assure that the least advantaged segments of the American population have a realistic chance to enter and graduate from a postsecondary institution.

Our purpose here at UVU is to empower youth who have academic potential, but who lack adequate information or school preparation to enter and continue in postsecondary education. Through the TRIO (Educational Talent Search/Upward Bound) developmental curriculum and guidance processes, students are expected to improve their academic skills, social skills, and motivation to pursue and complete their postsecondary options.
