Managing Life Transitions

Managing Life Transitions is a course that focuses on effectively dealing with grief, emotional processing, setting boundaries, and understanding relationships. This is a six week course that meets once a week for three hours. Individuals in class make connections with others and learn valuable information and skills useful in navigating conflict, distress, and difficult life events. Safety, respect, and confidentiality are highly valued throughout the course.

Mission Statement: UVU Turning Point, the Center for Personal and Career Development is a resource center for Utah Valley University students, faculty and staff, as well as community members. Turning Point is dedicated to delivering quality supportive, educational and life management experiences to participants in relation to personal, emotional, social, professional and economic well being.

Marriage Workshop: The marriage workshop is an educational experience and not therapeutic counseling. The marriage workshop focuses on learning concepts and skills to enhance marriage and not individual or partner issues, problematic behaviors, and specific conflicts unique to your relationship. The facilitator will direct attention back to informational concepts and principles and not engage in therapy. The workshop lasts an hour and a half and includes information from current research, theory, and clinical experience.

Pre-Marriage Workshop: The pre-marriage workshop is an educational learning experience and not therapeutic intervention. The pre-marriage workshop focuses on learning concepts and skills that are beneficial in preparing for marriage and will not focus on partner issues, problematic behaviors, and specific conflicts unique to your relationship. The facilitator will direct attention back to informational concepts and principles and not engage in therapy. The workshop lasts an hour and a half and includes information from current research, theory, and clinical experience. Completion of the RELATE questionnaire found at www.relate-institute.org/ is highly recommended prior to attending the pre-marriage workshop.

Marital and Pre-Marital Therapy: Therapeutic services are available through Turning Point and interest in services may be discussed with your facilitator. Due to the number of clients seen by our therapist you will most likely be on a waiting list before receiving services or you can contact the BYU Comprehensive Clinic at 801-422-7759 for couples counseling.

One Piece at a Time

Parenting

This parenting class focuses on strengthening the parent child relationship. The goal is to appreciate and prize children as unique individuals. Topics include learning to listen, giving praise and attention, having routines, implementing effective discipline, setting limits, applying consequences, teaching values to children and developing flexibility in parenting. This class is for parents with children of all ages. Parents are encouraged to attend together if at all possible.

This is an eight week course that meets twice a week. It is a combination of Personal Development (taught on Tuesday) and Professional Development (taught on Thursday). Classes are available both day and evening.
