Utah Valley University’s University College offered its first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from mid-June to the end of July, 2013. The course was designed primarily for students who will be starting or restarting college within the next year. It provided math refresher materials covering a wide range of mathematical concepts together with information about success in college.
Information about the course can be found below:
Incoming college students are placed in math courses based on placement exams. Students with lower scores are required to take more math courses. Preparation for these placement exams can mean higher scores and fewer required math courses in college. Students who have already taken a placement exam (e.g. ACT) can use these materials to study and retest, hopefully scoring higher.
The provided study materials are individualized based on a student’s current knowledge. Each student will be provided a customized learning path, so study time is spent where it’s needed most.
The course will also provide college success material, such as test-taking strategies, new student orientation, and study techniques. All of this material can be accessed separately from the math content, so even if a student has already placed highly in math, or has tested out of it completely, the course can provide valuable information to help the student get the most out of the college experience. This content will come from the College Success Department and Student Success & Retention at UVU.
The course will be completely free and open to anyone in the world, and we plan to specifically invite as many incoming/prospective UVU students as possible. The instructor will hold weekly study sessions and UVU peer mentors will participate and interact with students, primarily through discussion boards.
This course is hosted by Canvas.
This course has now concluded and cannot be registered for at this point. We are discussing plans for improving the course and will post information here when we decide what we are doing with the course.
