Transitional III Program

What is the Transitional III program?

The Transitional III program is offered by University College to provide a positive, supportive environment for students whose test scores indicate they could benefit from university preparatory coursework in three core areas. Traditionally, under-prepared students are at a greater risk for academic difficulty and attrition. Providing interventional registration and advising support for these students will improve their academic experience and increase the likelihood of a timely and successful completion of graduation requirements at UVU.

Mission Statement

The University College mission is to provide an early educational home to help students explore the direction of their academic careers, transfer into degree-granting programs, or continue their education for personal and career enhancement. Proactive involvement with students through academic advisement, supplemental instruction, and tutoring programs encourages retention and fosters student success. Departmental offerings help students to become better prepared for subsequent college course work. Through collaborations with other academic schools and student services, we strengthen interdisciplinary partnerships that benefit students across campus and support institutional goals.

How do I know if I am a Transitional III student?

Transitional III students are designated according to the New Student Assessment (NSA) test which assesses skills in three areas: reading, writing, and mathematics. New freshman students whose scores on the NSA place them into developmental courses in all three areas become part of the Transitional III program. Transfer, continuing education, and Trades, Technology and Industry (TTI) students are not eligible for this program.

What are developmental courses?

Developmental courses include any reading, writing, or mathematics class with a course number lower than 1000. For example, CTRS 0800, ENGH 0990, MAT 0950 are developmental education courses. These courses provide semester credit and are included in your GPA, but are not applicable toward graduation credit. These courses are designed to prepare students to successfully complete college-level courses.

What is my role as a Transitional III student?

Registration

In order to register for classes, you must first meet with a designated Academic Advisor for the Transition 3 program. These advisors will assist you in planning an appropriate schedule designed to address the academic areas requiring further development.

Advisor Counseling

At designated times throughout the semester, you will meet again with your Transitional III Advisor to discuss your academic progress and address any questions or concerns you may have.

Workshops

You will also participate in at least three study skills workshops offered throughout the semester. These workshops will be offered twice a week except during holidays and student breaks. These workshops are open to all students and will cover topics such as note-taking, memory, test anxiety, stress, and time management. Click here for this year’s Workshop Calendar (pdf).
