New Free Public Information Officer Program Available (Published Date: 07.28.2011)

The Firefighters Support Foundation’s (FSF) newest free training program, Public Information Officer: Roles and Responsibilities, is now available. The program consists of a 35-minute video program and an accompanying 45-slide PowerPoint presentation about this not well-understood but vital function.

The program covers:

  • Responsibilities of the PIO
  • The PIO and incident command
  • Information release guidelines
  • Media relations
  • Message mapping – a powerful tool
  • How to choose a PIO
  • How to train as a PIO

Firefighters and EMT's can view the video material with the PowerPoint file acting as their hard copy notes, or they can use either resource independently. The PowerPoint and video portions of the program can be used by any agency or member either as-is, or as a basis from which to construct training modules or presentations of their own. Simply go to www.ffsupport.org to download your free copy.

Will this class lead to Utah Certification as a PIO?
UFRA has not reviewed the class in relationship to the NFPA Standard so the answer is no.

Does UFRA have PIO training that does lead to certification scheduled in the near future?
Not currently. The Training Division can schedule that class if there are 15 people committed to take it. E‑mail steve.lutz@uvu.edu if you would like to take the class and we'll try to get one scheduled if there is sufficient interest.
