Diabetes Prevention
What is it?
This program is designed to prevent diabetes and is for those who are considered pre-diabetic. Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.
The risk factors for pre-diabetes are:
- Age - The risk of pre-diabetes increases with age
- Overweight - Defined as a body mass index (BMI) >25 (>23 if Asian American or >26 if Pacific Islander)
- Blood pressure - 140/90 mm/Hg
- Abdnormal lipid levels - HDL cholesterol <40 mg.dL for men and <50 mg/dL for women; triglyceride level >250 mg/dL
- Family history - parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
- Ethnicity - those of African American, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino or Pacific Islander heritage have a higher risk for developing diabetes.
- History of gestational diabetes - or gave birth to at least one baby weighing 9 lbs of more
- Inactive lifestyle - exercises less than three times a week.
This program is a one-on-one program that will last approximately eight weeks. Participants will receive information on exercise, nutrition, and weight management. This program is not a temporary plan, but a permanent lifestyle change.
