Entrepreneurship Institute
at UVU
Entrepreneurship Institute coordinates academic teaching, research, and community outreach programs for entrepreneurship at Utah Valley University. We lead out in the Central Utah community with regard to entrepreneurship education because of our:
• Local focus on business development
• Strategic relationships
• Applied teaching method
• Network of support at UVU
Local Focus on Business Development
We see the business development of Central Utah as the cornerstone of our activities. We serve and anchor the communities in and around Utah Valley with our students, consulting, training, and research.
Strategic Relationships
We take pride in our ability to integrate with the Small Business Development Center and other government supported organizations, the Utah Valley Entrepreneurs Forum, the Utah Angels along with other private business organizations, and national and international academic organizations supporting entrepreneurship education and research. These entrepreneurship and economic development organizations work with us in the classroom, as mentors, and in developing and operating a student incubator and seed capital fund.
Teaching Method
Our teaching foundation is experiential education. The majority of learning takes place in project-based classes where students learn by doing, reflecting, and synthesizing. These projects often involve real clients from UVU and the larger community to bring a true sense of reality to the classroom.
Network Support at UVU
We have strong support from the UVU commonly in using entrepreneurship as a principle brand of the school of business. In addition, we are developing relationships and programs across the college to encourage the development of the entrepreneurial spirit in all students at the university.

Extracurricular Programs
UVU Business Plan Competition
The Entrepreneurship Institute sponsors the UVU Business Plan Competition along with the Entrepreneur’s Club. This business plan completion provides the opportunity to win over $3,000 every year. Students in any discipline may identify, evaluate, and document a business opportunity and enter the competition. It is not only a great learning experience for those involved but it also provides seed capital for the winners and a launching pad for the larger Utah Entrepreneur Challenge (UEC). The Entrepreneurship Institute is also a sponsor of the Opportunity Quest, which is a pre-competition to the BPC. For more information go to http://uvu.e.club.googlepages.com/
Be Your Own Boss: the Ultimate High School Entrepreneurship Camp
The summer camp is a one-week day camp for high school age students in Central Utah. Started in 2003 as a way of bringing high school students to campus and expose them to our faculty and the subject of entrepreneurship. The camp has been a great success attracting 20 to 30 students a year, involving both UVU faculty and outside business professionals as inspirational speakers, content presenters, and business mentors. Not only is the camp a solid academic experience, it is also a lot of fun. For more information, log on to http://www.uvu.edu/woodbury/progs/entrepreneurship/byob/.
Student Incubator
The UVU student incubator provides office space (cubicles), equipment, and business support in the basement of the Advancement Building. Students pay a modest rent and must report on their business activities each month as a way of encouraging them to build a viable business entity. Admission to the incubator starts with a solid business concept and a rudimentary business plan. It is open to current UVU students on a space available basis. Utah Business Boardroom
The Entrepreneurship Institute produced The Utah Business Boardroom, a cable based television production highlighting Utah entrepreneurs and business issues relevant to them. We have produced 16 segments that air on a regional cable station during prime time.
The format features a 10-minute video segment about the entrepreneurs company followed by a 20-minute round table discussion about specific business issues faced by the entrepreneur. This program will expand into a series of video cases for use in teaching entrepreneurship in high school and university programs. Scholarships
Through the generous contributions of our Entrepreneur Partners, we have been able to provide two full scholarships to students studying in the entrepreneurship concentration. An additional scholarship is awarded to the high school student achieving the greatest success in the Be Your Own Boss entrepreneurship camp.
