Community Writing Center Story Writing Contest

Write Outside Yourself: Write of PassageWrite Outside Yourself

Utah Valley's Young Adult Story Writing Contest

Contest Overview

The Utah Valley University & Community Writing Centers are hosting the 2nd incarnation of the "Write Outside Yourself" Young Adult Story Writing Contest! Student writers in junior high/middle school and high school can compete for a chance to be published in print and recognized at a celebration in June 2015.

Write of Passage

"The turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core of strength within you that survives all hurt."

-Max Lerner

If living were a simple journey from A to B, our lives wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. Obstacles and challenges force us to grow and learn, take on new responsibilities and skills. From becoming a Jedi Knight to earning a learners permit, rites of passage teach us about failure, triumph, and the journey from weakness to strength.

This year, the UVU Writing Center is calling for “writes of passage”—stories about growing up, coming into power, and overcoming challenges. Non-fiction accounts, autobiographical stories, and fantasy/sci-fi fiction are all welcome.

Story themes include but are not limited to:

  • The heroes journey
  • The lessons of failure
  • Growing up
  • Overcoming challenges

New Entry Deadline: February 2nd, 2015

  • The author must be a middle school or high school student in Utah Valley
  • The fiction or non-fiction story must be original (fan fiction is disallowed)
  • Story content must be appropriate to a young adult audience
  • The story cannot exceed 15 double-spaced pages
  • The story fits within the contest theme
  • The story must be submitted online by the due date

Stories will be judged in a double-blind reading by a panel of Utah Valley University judges, and 10-15 winners will be selected for print publication!
