7.8.2010: Arendt (WRS) and Gerber (WDS) start creation of initial mobile plan7.27.2010: mobile web draft document (docx - 7.18.2010) sent to N. Gerber, V. Hale, J. Kennedy, B. Michaelis, C. Taylor, R. Sacks, P. Taylor, R. Walker, C. Gardner, and K. Olsen andput on the President's Council meeting agenda for 8/19/2010.
8.4.2010: A. Smith of library contacts A. Arendt re: idea of library creating a website for mobile devices. Report above shot to Smith.
8.19.2010: Plan presented to President's Council. Agree to move forward with plan
Nathan Gerber reported 2.5% of all traffic on the UVU web site
is through mobile devices or 173,000 visits. A year ago a survey
was taken of graduating high school seniors. At that time 4%
had viewed college website on mobile devices, and the survey
this year numbers had jumped to 23%. Their proposal is to build
a mobile web system that is built on a new language‐HTML5. It
allows everything currently in HTML, plus will work on any
phone with a browser, and looks like an app. They will focus
first on needs of current students, do evaluation, identifying the
top 10 things they would like on a mobile system. They would
then expand to future students, faculty and staff. There will also
be a link for the full web site. Sniffer technology will be able to
identify which technology the user has and will go to M.uvu.edu
for mobile. Content management system will allow
identification of the parts wanted on the mobile site and will
publish content to both places simultaneously. It will take
several months to get template in place, and will then go from
technical to content, with each department choosing what goes
on the mobile site. Only resources needed are a iPhone and
Android phone, which has been funded. Approved to move
forward with President’s caution not to over‐invest energy on
the project. (http://www.uvu.edu/president/presidentscouncil/minutes/2010-minutes/8-19-10_pc-minutes.pdf)

10.7.2010: N. Gerber, N. Peirce, J. Cranney, P. Taylor, J. Kennedy, A. Arendt meet at WDS conference room to discuss mobile plan
- J. Cranney will do coding in Omni
- P. Taylor will create one question survey for UVU home page that goes to mobile users. (one question is what they would want on a UVU mobile 'app')
11.4.2010: Arendt (to J. Cranney, N. Gerber, J. Kennedy, B. Michaelis, N Peirce, P. Taylor) So since we do not have the one question survey on the home page yet and the clarification of content is what is holding up the project moving anywhere, I did give the question to the 25 students in my Digital Media for Intercultural Communications class. Here are their responses:

If UVU were to create a mobile 'app' what would you want on it?
1. The only app I use is on Iphone -- it seems regular apps on most phones/smart phones are hard to navigate. So, maybe having an app that is easy to navigate, has what's happening at school for the day - events. Also it would be nice to buy event tickets
2. Easy access, simple design (not too overcrowded), fast to load. Free
3. Information about the courses/degrees available here. Ability to pay tuition.
4. UVLink. Breaking news (like if a building burns down or some idiot causes a plasma leak). Deals. Hours that labs are open like in CS DGM and so forth.
5. Access to Financial Aid Status and Registration Status. Access to Blackboard
6. Access to blackboard

Chat with classmates
Use the facebook app as a guide, its layout is super easy to use
Connect with professors
7. Blackboard
UVLink
8. Blackboard
UVLink
9. I would like to have the UVU email as well as events and registration tools
10. Coupons and news delivered to my phone once a day
11. I would not want one. I am not a phone person and it would give an advantage for addicted phone users to get one up on those who can not text or do not want to text. I think you are opening a can of worms for having unauthorizing individuals using this program and safety for other peoples information.
12. Being able to follow grades and assignments in class
13. Parking lot availability – show which lots are full and less full.
14. More function, more images, more videos.
11.4.2010: Combining list from N. Peirce and input from class leaves us with: (to J. Cranney, N. Gerber, J. Kennedy, B. Michaelis, N Peirce, P. Taylor)

So, until we do the survey, I would go with the above as an outline for our initial version. I still strongly support doing the survey though. My vote remains to have one question (like above) and have it show for those who hit our home page on a mobile device and collect responses from a minimum of 100 people.
Do you want me to have Jason mock up a 'look' for the above outline in Photoshop? As I understand it, Jeannie is doing the build-out and coding itself (per 10/7 meeting).
11.8.2010: N. Gerber, N. Peirce, J. Kennedy, J. Cranney, T. Doggett, B. Michaelis, N. Peirce, P. Taylor, and S. Whitehead to meet again RE: updates on mobile project
11.15.2010: J. Kennedy creates original PSD at http://resource.uvsc.edu/mobile/UVUmobile_01.zip (to Arendt, Gerber, Cranney)
11.29.2010: Cancelled
12.3.2010:
Meeting cancelled but below proposed by Gerber as action items (Arendt, Cranney, Doggett, Kennedy, Michaelis, Peirce, Whitehead)
1. We meet on December 13th at 1:30 pm in the WDS conference room
2. Meanwhile, Jason and Jeanie will work on getting the design issues finished up and implemented
3. Nathan will send the navigation outline to everyone that we looked at in our last meeting
4. Jeanie, Phil, and Brett will look at developing a template in OmniUpdate that can be used by a mobile users group to create the pages needed for the site in many areas throughout the UVU OU system.
5. Tom and Brett will be working on getting map data put together from a student project so that we can have a mobile map showing real time shuttle movement on campus.
6. Anne will start collecting content for the pages in the outline.
12.3.2010:
Outline from Gerber based on Tamu (Arendt, Cranney, Doggett, Kennedy, Michaelis, Peirce, Whitehead)

Nate, I need to come up with some text for athletics to be used on the version1 mobile website for UVU ( mockup currently at http://webstaging.uvu.edu/uvumobile/ ) and currently have the attached (Excel doc) What do you think? The idea, by the way, is to only put on stuff that we think people could actually be using their mobile devices for :-)
