Online Tutoring

We understand that face-to-face support doesn’t meet the needs of every student at every time, which is why we continue to find innovative and dynamic modalities of support like online tutoring. Take advantage of free remote support using our online platform, Upswing.

FAQ for Online Tutoring

Want to find out more about online tutoring? What to expect when you start a session? What sort of audio/visual equipment do you need? Feel free to explore below or contact our peer-tutoring coordinator Laurie Toro if you have further questions.

Q. Is online tutoring as effective as in-person tutoring?

Online tutoring is just as effective as in-person tutoring but with the added benefits of convenience, flexibility of session times and a relaxed environment for the student. Our experience has shown that many of the students find online tutoring to be at least equally as effective and enjoy the added benefits that come with this form of tutoring.

Q. How much does tutoring cost?

It’s free. In fact, all our services are free. It’s as simple as that.

Q. What does an online session look like?

If you’ve used Facetime, Skype, Zoom, or any other video chat services, you can expect a pretty similar experience. The tutoring platform we use, Upswing, is basically a video chat platform but with some added features that really tailor it to a tutoring session. You have a digital whiteboard, an advanced formula editor, document sharing, and screen share capabilities.

Q.What do I need besides internet and a computer?

You will need high speed internet and a computer that is compatible with the software. The tutoring platform allows for communication through video chat and a microphone. While these are not required for using online tutoring, your tutoring experience may be improved with these tools.

Q. What happens if I miss an appointment?

Tutoring assistance is in high demand. If you are not able to keep your scheduled appointment, notify the learning center either by phone, 801-863-5376 or email tutoring@uvu.edu, at least two hours prior to the start of your session. The online schedule system, Uspwing, will automatically disable the accounts of students who miss two appointments without notification.
