AT&T Provides Scholarships

On June 26, AT&T presented Utah Valley University with a $24,000 scholarship grant. $19,000 will provide scholarships for low-income Latino students. The remaining $5,000 will support a female student studying within UVU's Center for Constitutional Studies.

Utah has one of the largest educational gaps between its Hispanic and white populations.

  • 67% of Utah's Hispanics completed high school
  • 94% of Utah's whites completed high school
  • 16% of Utah's Hispanic young adults attend college
  • 45% of Utah's white young adults attend college

In 2007, the Latino Initiative was launched to increase educational and career opportunities for Latino students and their families. It engages students, parents, educators, and community leaders in providing information about college access, opportunities, and resources. It also assists local schools in preparing Latino students academically and socially for college education.

Between 2007 and 2014, Latino student enrollment at UVU nearly tripled. UVU currently has the largest percentage of Latino students among four-year colleges and universities in Utah.

"These funds will help 19 Latino students get closer to obtaining their higher education degrees. We are very thankful to AT&T for supporting education and for working with us to change students' lives," said Yudi Lewis, Director of the UVU Latino Initiative.

The $5,000 Rebecca D. Lockhart Endowed Scholarship honors the deceased former speaker of the Utah House of Representatives for her outstanding leadership in public service. The scholarship will benefit a female student with an aptitude and interest in public service. It is intended to inspire women to pursue degrees and to believe that they can make a positive difference in their communities.

"AT&T is proud to honor former Speaker Rebecca Lockhart through our support of her namesake scholarship. We hope that her legacy of service and leadership carries on to the next generation of female leaders through this meaningful scholarship," Tara Thue, AT&T director of external affairs.
