UVU Symphony Performs at Nu Skin

Nu Skin Hosts UVU Symphony Performance for School of the Arts

On a Saturday night in November, guests gathered to enjoy dinner and a special performance by the Utah Valley University Symphony. Nu Skin and its vice chair of the board, Steve Lund, generously hosted the event.

During a beautiful dinner catered by Nu Skin, Lund and President Matthew S. Holland spoke about Nu Skin's relationship with UVU. Guests also heard from Cheung Chau, director of orchestral studies at the University, who introduced the evening's performance.

In Nu Skin's atrium, the UVU symphony performed Symphonie Fantastique, by Hector Berlioz, and three dance pieces.

Nu Skin Proudly Supports UVU

Nu Skin believes in the importance of supporting UVU, particularly the School of the Arts. The company has proudly collaborated with the school on previous performances. Their stunning atrium serves as a performance space for several UVU groups.

Nu Skin has also provided support in other forms. They have been the title sponsor of the President's Scholarship Ball for the past five years and sponsored the UVU Ballroom Dance Team's trip to China. In addition, they have created several scholarships for UVU students.

Felix Desposorio – One of Many Talented Students

Felix Desposorio, a UVU music student is showcased at the VIP dinner

During the event, one of UVU's School of the Arts students was showcased.

Felix Desposorio is a nontraditional student who decided to return to school after working several years in construction. He knew he wanted to play music and applied to UVU's music program. There he found his passion and joined the percussion ensemble, wind symphony, and orchestra. By his second year of school, Felix was receiving scholarships to help him continue pursuing his dream. He now also plays in the UVU Symphony.

Felix is just one of many talented students in UVU's School of the Arts. These students are among the most talented in the country, with awards to prove it. To name just two, the theater department was honored two years in a row with Outstanding Production at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, a national competition. Last year, the Ballroom Dance Tour Team won the British Ballroom Formation Dancing Championship at the Blackpool Dance Festival in England. Unfortunately, these students are forced to learn in subpar facilities.

Reaching A Monumental Goal

Over the past year, UVU has engaged the community in a monumental campaign to raise money for a new performing arts building.

UVU's arts students have remarkable talent, but they do not benefit from the school's current facilities. Recognizing this, the greater community has rallied around UVU's effort to construct a performing arts building. The record-setting campaign has raised an unprecedented amount of money in a relatively short time. Thanks to our generous supporters, fundraising is nearing completion.

At the Nu Skin event, President Holland announced that the Utah State Board of Regents and the State Building Board, in advance of the legislative session, had put UVU's performing arts building at the top of its building priority lists. "This is happening!" exclaimed President Holland, inspiring a hearty round of applause.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new building is expected to take place this coming spring. We are eagerly looking forward to it.
