Programs

Program Submission Overview

An R401 form must be submitted to UVU's Board of Trustees when a new program is proposed or an existing program has a name change, a content change of 50% or more, or is being deleted, or when there is a new academic unit or change to a current unit (i.e., department, college/school, center, office . . . ). The R401 contains statistics and facts (financial, student/labor market demand, needed resources, etc.) that will be reviewed from the department level all the way through final approval (if necessary) by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). While an R401 does contain a section for Program Curriculum and a Graduation Plan, it does not take the place of submitting the curriculum in the current curriculum software. The R401 is a parallel process to curriculum submission, not a replacement. In order for a program to move forward, both must be completed.

"The procedure of degree approval is rigorous. The idea for a new degree comes from faculty responding to changes in a specific field, accreditation standards, student demand, or market forces. Before academic programs are sent to the Regents for review, they undergo scrutiny by academic departments, college or division committees, academic senates, executive officers, and institutional boards of trustees. Thus, institutional and Regents' reviews hold academic programs to high standards of quality and assure that graduates who earn these degrees and credentials are prepared to live successfully in and contribute to the welfare of the State and its citizens."
