For dancer Lauren Bloomfield, UVU provides exactly the right opportunities

My name is Lauren Bloomfield and I am a senior dance major here at Utah Valley University. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old in just about any style I could try. I am currently double majoring in modern dance and dance education and I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience here in both of these capacities. Double majoring has definitely been a challenge because it is a lot of extra work. However it has been a great experience and the faculty has been so great to help ensure my success with this goal. From my freshman year I have had a faculty mentor helping me shape my future in dance. A future that is still unsure for me, but with the dual degree of modern and dance education I have a lot of opportunities to perform and to teach.

I love to perform and UVU has given me the capacity to perform, a lot. I have been on the modern dance companies offered here at Utah Valley University since my freshman year. I was on Synergy dance company my first year, where I received many opportunities to dance in student pieces and collaborate with my peers. From my sophomore to senior year I have been so privileged to be a member of the pre-professional company, Contemporary Dance Ensemble(CDE). Through this I have been received so many incredible opportunities. On the company we are able to work closely with some of the dance departments exceptional faculty such as Monica Campbell, Angela Banchero-Kelleher, and Sarah Donohue. We also have had the opportunity to work with a Salt Lake City professional company, Repertory Dance Ensemble(RDT) the past two years. Last year we performed with the company in their fall show in Andy Noble’s piece Tower. This year we have worked with the amazing Nina Watt and Jennifer Scanlon on Doris Humphrey’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, which will be performed with RDT in April.

Contemporary Dance Ensemble has provided me with many opportunities that I am extremely grateful for. Recently, our company has been working on our upcoming show. The show is appropriately titled Ricochet, as we are jumping between pieces created in the 1930’s, to 2005, to a few years ago, to right now as new pieces will be making their debut at the concert. The night will feature pieces by Doris Humphrey, Sarah Donohue, Michio Ito, Angela Banchero-Kelleher, Doris Trujillo, and Carl Flink. All of these choreographers are so inspiring and I feel so blessed to be able to perform their work. The show is February 7-9 at 7:30p in the Center Ragan Theater on Utah Valley University’s main campus.
