BFA Exhibit for Rachel Haslam: The Color of Fashion

The famous German painter Hans Hofmann once said, “The whole world, as we experience it visually, comes to us through the mystic realm of color. Our entire being is nourished by it. This mystic quality of color should likewise find expression in a work of art.” As an abstract expressionist, Hofmann worked with the use of color to convey his expressive art. It is with this basis, that color is the ultimate expressive medium, that I chose to create specific color fashion photographs to convey personality and the emotions these colors evoke in me.

As an artist I find the expression of my own emotions and feelings are best communicated through photography. It is my creative outlet and provides me a way to say things that might otherwise be difficult for me to express in person. Through photography I am free to portray emotions, I am able to step outside my own physical and emotional limitations to share my innermost thoughts and feelings with the world. I love being an artist and photographer and strive through my work to inspire others and perhaps free them to rise to greater heights of personal fulfillment and creativity.

Fashion Photography inspires me! The complimentary use of color and light accented by the beauty of the human form combine to evoke emotion and create energy. Color is in every aspect of our lives. Like people and their personalities, colors are complicated! We each respond to colors uniquely on a subconscious level and they can have a deep and lasting impact on our emotions and psyche.

We may never fully understand our unique physical and emotional reaction to one color or another, but by learning the symbolism attributed to each color and then portraying their meaning through fashion-centric photography, we can come one step closer. Color truly is the ultimate medium of expression and when combined with personality traits, emotions, lighting, and packaged in fashion, the results are inspirational.
