Competition Rules

The judges will give special consideration/attention to technique, use of air, phrasing, and expression.

Winners

A first and second place winner may be selected in each division. Judges are not obligated to award all prizes in each division. Prizes will be announced soon.

High School Division Required Repertoire

  1. A solo piece of your choice, with or without piano, see rules for more information
  2. Rose: Étude no. 32 (from the 40 Études, Book 2)

College Division Required Repertoire

  1. A solo piece of your choice, with or without piano, see rules for more information
  2. Bach (arr. Delecluse) – Quinze Études – No. 1 Adagio
  3. Orchestral Excerpts:
    • Deems Taylor: Through the Looking Glass – Jabberwocky
    • Verdi: Tosca – Lucevan le stelle
    • Mendelssohn: Symphony no. 3 – II. Vivace non troppo, through bar 40

Application Requirements

Applicants must be age 26 or younger (by April 9, 2018) to compete in the collegiate division. Only students enrolled in baccalaureate or master’s programs may apply for the collegiate division.

Applicants must be enrolled in a high school or the equivalent at a private school or home school system to compete in the high school division.

A $15 application fee must accompany all applications. $20 application fee applies to all late applicants. Early registration ends April 21; late registration ends April 24.

Musical Requirements

Selected pieces can be whole works or movement(s) from larger works. Selections should not exceed approximately 10 minutes in length. Cuts are allowed to fit a longer work into the allotted time. Judges may ask for selections from the required pieces and/or your selected piece(s).

Applicants must provide their own pianist.

Solo works must be performed from original sheet music. Memorization is not required.

Two copies of your music must be provided for the judging panel, and may be photocopied. If you have made cuts, please clearly indicate those in the parts.

No application fee refunds will be given to students who do not attend the competition.

The competition will be open to the public. Audience members who distract from the performance will be asked to leave.

The retail value of prizes does not indicate that a cash prize will be offered.
