Habitat Home Finished

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Michelle Mariscal and her two young children officially got a new home.

It is the third home built by students from Utah Valley University’s Construction Technologies Department for a needy Utah County family, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Utah County. A ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the home, located at 764 W. 600 South in Springville, was held just before noon. The home took about a year for UVU construction students to complete.

“Over the years, UVU’s Construction Technologies Department has been involved in numerous construction projects that provide engaged learning opportunities and help make a difference in our community,” said Barry Hallsted, construction technologies department chair. “The work means so much more to the students when they meet the property owners and realize that while they are learning, they are making a difference in the lives of others in our community.”

The 1,400-square-foot single-level home has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, kitchen, family/living room and a two-car garage. Besides UVU’s role in constructing the low-cost home for the Mariscals, various other UVU departments and clubs contributed to preparing the house for the family’s move in. The UVU Mentors donated a move-in kit, the UVU Service Council stocked the pantry with food, the UVU student chapter of Habitat for Humanity decorated the bathrooms, a communications class is decorating a boy’s bedroom and the President’s Office sponsored the decoration of a girl’s bedroom.

“This is a great example of a community partnership between UVU and Habitat for Humanity,” said Alexis Palmer, UVU Volunteer & Service-Learning Center director. “It merges academics and student involvement together and provides a much needed service to our community. Utah County is not immune to the economic hardships that we are all facing, and this is just one way UVU can address those hardships.”
