Engineering & Technology Week 2021

Join us for a virtual reality learning experience designed for High School, Middle School, Junior High, and Elementary school students. Students will learn about the fast-growing world of engineering and technology, explore potential career opportunities, and experience the ways in which these industries are changing the world around them.

This event is part of the global Engineers Week created by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). The purpose of the event is to encourage the next generation of engineers by providing opportunities for them to learn more and find their interest in engineering and technology. This event harnesses virtual reality technology and is compatible with Oculus VR Headsets. For those without headsets, the event is also accessible using an internet browser. Eligible schools will receive a VR headset to participate in this event.

Event Features

Keynote Speaker

Teri Newell, Deputy Director for Planning and Investment at the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will be our keynote speaker.

Project competition

Middle school and high school students are invited to submit projects. Winners will receive UVU scholarships and awards.

 

Lab Tours

Explore engineering and technology lab tours at UVU using virtual reality.

 

Free Swag

Participating Schools will receive free swag items!

 

Free VR Headset (loan)

Eligible schools may request to loan a new Oculus Virtual Reality Headset for free. Schools may also apply for an extension to use the headset as part of future lesson plans.

Keynote Speaker

Teri Newell

Teri Newell is Deputy Director for Planning and Investment at the Utah Department of Transportation. In this role, Teri leads UDOT’s program development, technology and innovation, and employee learning and safety programs. She facilitated Utah’s Transportation Vision, gaining agreement with 25 partnering organizations that transportation has a role in enhancing Utahans’ quality of life statewide.

Prior to becoming deputy director, Teri was Region Three director over six counties in central Utah headquartered in Orem. During her tenure at Region Three, Teri contributed to planning, preconstruction and construction of the UVX Bus Rapid Transit line in Provo and Orem; I-15 Technology Corridor in Lehi and the UVU Pedestrian Bridge connecting the Orem Intermodal Center with the Utah Valley University campus.

Teri has worked for UDOT for 25 years and earned her degree in civil engineering at Iowa State University. She is a professional licensed engineer and worked for Salt Lake County and several engineering consulting firms prior to joining UDOT. Teri serves on the advisory board for the College of Engineering and Technology at UVU and the Utah Clean Cities . She enjoys running and biking with her husband and two children and is known for her love of gardening and reading biographies.

Let us know you are coming by completing the registration form below. Teachers and schools may register on behalf of their students. Parents may register on behalf of elementary school, middle school, junior high, or high school students.

Release Form

Parents of students who are attending at the UVU campus must fill out the attached waiver form. Form should then be collected by the responsible teacher/advisor before students can board the bus to come to UVU.
