National Summit on Dual-Mission Institutions in Higher Education
Combining Community College and University Programming for Greater Access and Excellence
in Higher Education
Utah Governor Gary Herbert and the Utah State Board of Regents, partnering with Utah Valley University, Weber State University, Dixie State University, and the National Governors Association, will host a national two-day higher education summit on May 16-17 on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, Utah.
The objective of the Summit is to bring together like-minded leaders in higher education whose universities and colleges use a dual mission model to find innovative ways to improve education and provide opportunities to a wider population. Registration is open to educators, policy experts, government leaders and all who are interested in the future of Higher Education and the Dual-Mission Model.
A Dual-Mission Model is the intentional merging of community-technical colleges and four-year universities under one roof, or where community colleges offer four-year degrees. Utah has long been at the forefront of this movement, pioneering a dual-mission model of higher education at several of its regional universities. Colleges and universities in Florida, Ohio, Georgia, and Colorado have been, or are in the process of, developing this model as well. Internationally, a similar movement is taking place in Canada and the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister Theresa May has called for major reorientation and investment in career and technical education.
Subsequently, the focus of the summit is for national and international experts to explore the dual-mission model in detail, discussing its possibilities and limitations as states tackle higher education’s challenges and seek to maximize finite resources while providing necessary training and programs to sustain and grow the workforce and economy.
In addition to high-profile acting roles on stage and screen, LeVar Burton served for 26 years as host and executive producer of children’s television series “Reading Rainbow,” which encouraged kids to discover the power of reading. Burton has been a lifelong advocate for literacy, education, and opportunities for children.
