A common question amongst young and old readers alike, the teacher of this classroom had her own unique way of responding. At the beginning of the year, students illustrated the spine of their favorite book and then placed their illustrations on the class “shelf.” (The “shelf” was illustrated on the door where students entered their room). Along with the title and author, the contributor’s name was also visible. Students visited the “shelf” throughout the year, often going to the student who illustrated the book spine and asking questions about that book. This door display stayed up all year and sparked interest in all kinds of books and provided stumped kids with great choices for their next read.
