Program Details

This is a service program that educates children and parents about oral health. Dental cleanings and restorative work is provided to the local children. Students will learn about instrument sterilization, work as a dental hygienist or assistant to the dentists, apply fluoride, and help manage the children through the process. Students learn to work as a team. Dental hygiene students improve skills on more difficult patients than seen in the UVU clinic. The children who are served are in great need for oral health because the lack of dentists in the area. Accommodations are historic hotels in Antiqua and a local hotel with a cook in San Martin. All transportation is provided. All meals are provided in San Martin. Walking tours are provided for cultural appreciation. Students benefit from learning about service to the under-served communities, how the dental clinic functions (you do not need dental experience to go), and learn about oral health for others and themselves.
