Immerse yourself in the language and culture of Japan. With four weeks in this beautiful country, students will get the opportunity to listen to and speak Japanese language in real life situations. Experience how traditional and modern Japanese cultures are interwoven in the daily life of the local people, all while seeing the differences and similarities between American and Japanese cultures.
We stay in Nagoya and study Japanese culture and language for three weeks. Students will home-stay with Japanese families. During our stay in Nagoya we visit Japanese preschools, universities and nursing homes, and interact with Japanese people in different age groups and participate in activities with them. Several instructors from local universities are invited to classes and students participate in hands-on activities. On weekends, we have daytrips to selected historical sites, theaters, museums and festivals in Nagoya and nearby cities.
After our stay in Nagoya we have a one-week trip to selected cities, including but not limited to Hiroshima, Nara, Kyoto and Tokyo. Nagoya is the fourth largest city in Japan yet small enough to participate in activities safely and comfortably. It has efficient public transportation systems and students can explore the city by themselves during their free time. There are important historical and religious sites such as the Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine, as well as world-renowned industries such as Toyota Motors and Noritake Ceramics in Nagoya and nearby cities.

UAS - University Advanced Standing - 24 credits completed, GPA 2.0 or higher MAT 1030 and ENGL 2010 or equivalent.
Must be 18 years of age at the time of departure
Minimum G.P.A.: 2.5
Prerequisite Course: JPNS 1010 or studies Japanese two years or more in high school
Physical requirements: Walking to and from classes, walking and climbing stairs at historical sites and muesums. Walking all day and climbing stairs during day trips. Train and bus rides, up to 3 hours. A short boat ride. Many visiting sites have no wheelchair accessibility. Must be able to wear a mask.
Each international destination has its own Covid-19 rules and it is the travelers responsibility to find out what is required. UVU will not be responsible for covering the cost of hotel quarantine or Covid-19 testing in foreign destinations. Students may be required to test negative for COVID-19 at their own expense by host countries as a condition for entry.

Fee covers in-country housing and transportation, excursions and program side-trips, meals while staying with host families, international insurance.
