Program Details

Students will work directly with Finnish educators in establishing lasting partnerships with local schools, while also discovering the rich history and culture of the Baltic region. The main program will include the following:

• Visit a variety of Finnish schools and the University of Helsinki Teacher Education Department to learn why Finland ranks among the highest in the world in education

• Enjoy an in-depth cultural family dinner experience in the home of a Finnish educator

• Meet many Finnish educators to exchange ideas and to create classroom-to- classroom or school-to-school partnerships

• Explore a new educational nature center in the forest

• Visit the Design District, the famous Farmers Market, and an island fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Helsinki

• Experience a traditional Finnish sauna on a lake

• Visit many of the most famous landmarks in Stockholm, the "Venice of the North", including the amazing Vasa Ship, the Nordic and Viking Museums, and Skansen, an outdoor fold museum that replicates the country's cultural heritage.

• Explore Gamla Stan (old city), the Royal Palace, the Nobel museum, and the Drottningholm Castle and Gardens.

• Tour the Fryhuset school and community center where you'll see how a unique organization in Sweden has focused on the passions of youth and the growing immigrant population over the years.

These locations have been specifically selected due to their exception education performance internationally, their reputation for high quality and innovative educational approaches, and their rich culture and history.

ECFS 208R - Directed Readings - Multicultural Education Experience (1 credit hour)




Program Requirements*

Must be 18 years of age at the time of departure

Must be School of Education student and/or with a declared education major. Must have at least 30 credits and have completed Introduction to Education (EDEL 1010).

Minimum G.P.A.: 2.0

Physical Requirements: The program may require a significant amount of walking on various terrain.

All UVU study abroad students must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Students may be required to test negative for COVID-19 at their own expense by host countries as a condition for entry.

Estimated Program Fee*

Fee covers in-country housing and transportation, site visits and excursions, some meals, international insurance.

Students should be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for possible COVID tests or quarantine stays if required by the host country for entry or exit.

All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee.
