Italy, as the cradle for much of western civilization, is a great venue for art majors and non-majors to study and understand the visual arts in their setting. Past participants have come away with a greater appreciation for the arts as well as a better understanding of European culture, legacies, people, viewpoints.
This program introduces students to the history of art and architecture through visits to churches, museums, and other monuments in a handful of cities in Italy. Italy's unique contributions to western civilization (from pre-Roman times through the Baroque) come alive when seeing the works in situ.
Students develop critical seeing, thinking, and writing skills through note taking, oral reports, reading packets, and essay exam. Open to all majors, this program is especially beneficial to visual arts majors/minors.
