Measuring Engagement

The purpose of the engagement instrument is to track, evaluate, and report the efficacy of student engagement on measures of student success. There is a great deal of research and discussion about student engagement (the cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects of how a student engages with a course and learning in general), but engaged learning doesn’t fall solely on the shoulders of the students. Teachers, the learning environment, and the curriculum itself can also impact engagement.

Our engagement instrument was designed with the intent of filling the holes in the research regarding academic and community engagement of the classroom, and understanding how these forms of engagement affect student success. It is a survey with 45 questions that the students answer about the course design and implementation in which the survey is administered. These responses were then combined according to their respective factor. Factor analysis revealed a model for how these factors relate to their respective engagement categories, and that in-class academic engagement is linked to students’ grades.

Assessment and evaluation are integral parts of engaged curriculum pillar. We use various methods to investigate the impact of in-class academic and community engagement on students’ course success. Structural equation modeling and path analysis indicated that the academic engagmennt impacts positively students’ course success and retention.

Furthermore, engaged learning is responsible for assessing the level of engagement of the High Impact Practices, in addition to the quality of delivery in terms of their objectives.
