Senior Capstone Projects

NGS Height Modernization- by Jude Jean Pierre

Summer 2017, I had the opportunity to work on my Capstone project as a Senior at Utah Valley University. As a student of the Geomatics program my topic is focused on the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), specifically GPS Bench Mark Project within Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, and Cache Counties. This project is concerned with determining the location of multiple NGS Bench Marks within the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) in each county to obtain current elevations. Using survey-grade GPS equipment, the metadata will be collected from two or more observation sessions on each of the found monuments. Gathering the data about the condition of the monument itself as well as the condition of the structure in which the monument resides, as well ties together anything that can help in the process of identification.

Archiving Utah’s Survey History, by Michael Nadeau, PLS

While working together with the Utah Council of Land Surveyors (UCLS), the general membership of the UCLS, Utah Valley University (UVU), and utilizing the Mountain West Digital Library (MWDL), this project has successfully archived important, interesting and historic items found in Utah’s survey history. To name a few additions to the collection, these updated archives include published articles written by Utah Professional Surveyors, all UCLS Foresights and other UCLS publications dating back to 1978, select UCLS board minutes dating back to 1964, historic maps and state laws from the 1800’s, and original city plats throughout Utah found in personal and public collections. All items gathered throughout the last two semesters have been pulled together into one main repository known as the UCLS’s page of UVU’s George Sutherland Archives for all future survey generations.
