Class logistics

 

Classes will be offered in three different modalities — face-to-face, livestream, and online. We have optimized each course to meet our safety precautions while still providing you a high-caliber education.

Face-to-face:

Face-to-face classes will rotate between attending in person and livestream. The rotation is based on your birthday (odd and even days). For example, Jan. 11 is odd, and Jan. 12 is even. Those with even-numbered birthdays will meet face-to-face on Monday and Tuesday; odd-numbered birthdays will meet face-to-face on Wednesday and Thursday. Your professor may adjust this depending on class needs.

Health

What resources are available at Student Health Services?

How can I access Student Health Services (SHS)?

Please see the Student Health website for information on how to access SHS, including mental health therapists and the crisis team. SHS is not a test site for COVID-19. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, please call SHS at 801-863-8876 rather than coming to campus. SHS will answer questions and give referrals to COVID-19 testing. 

You may also visit the Test Utah website where you can take an online assessment to determine symptoms and receive a test if needed.

Do you have tips to help me manage my stress and anxiety related to COVID-19?

Yes. SHS has resources available to help students that are dealing with stress and anxiety related to COVID-19.

If you are experiencing emotional distress related to COVID-19, you can also call Intermountain Healthcare’s COVID-19 Emotional Health Relief Hotline at 833-442-2211. There is no cost to call, and the hotline will be staffed every day from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

If you are in crisis, please access the SafeUT app, which will connect you to licensed counselors who are ready to respond 24/7 at no cost. You can text, call, or submit a tip anonymously.

What if I lost my job due to COVID-19?

Please contact the Department of Workforce Services to determine resources. You can also dial 211 to access the United Way of Utah County

What if I can’t pay a bill or have an urgent, unexpected expense? 

If you have a specific expense that threatens your housing, health, or safety, you can apply for the expense to be covered by the UVU Emergency Fund. These funds are usually given in amounts ranging from $50-$500. You are only eligible for this funding if you are enrolled in the current semester and have already accepted all grants and/or scholarships available to you. Fill out the Emergency Fund application to submit your request. 

You may also be interested in working with UVU’s Money Management Resource Center, which can help with managing money. Virtual appointments are available.

How do I access Financial Aid?

Food and housing

How can I access food resources?

Please visit the UVU Food Pantry website for details.

If you have children, all area school districts have been authorized to offer free grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches for all children ages 0–18. For a list of locations, please contact your child’s school district. 

Are there community resources available to students who are facing food or housing insecurity? 

Yes. Please visit the Student CARE website to access community resources or dial 211 to access the United Way of Utah County or visit their website to help support food or housing insecurity. 

Can I get out of my housing contract? 

In consultation with federal, state, and local officials, UVU made the determination to offer a variety of course delivery options for the fall 2020 semester, including face-to-face, livestreaming, and online. This was not an easy or light decision, as UVU is aware there are many affected by this decision, including students who signed housing contracts for the 2020-2021 academic year. The UVU community understands what a difficult situation this creates, but the safety and security of UVU students, faculty, and staff are of the highest importance. COVID-19 has created is unprecedented challenges. It has disrupted almost every aspect of daily life. Since UVU is not a party to the rental agreements, UVU unfortunately cannot provide legal advice or representation for students to cancel their housing contracts. We have reached out to several apartment complexes encouraging them and are hopeful the apartment managers will be willing to work with students as their living arrangements have changed. UVU apologizes for any inconvenience.

Will the fall semester start as scheduled?

Yes, fall semester begins on August 24. See all semester dates and deadlines.

What if I need to drop my classes? When is the last day to drop?

The drop deadlines for fall semester are as follows:August 28: First block classes
September 8: Full semester classes
September 14: Weekend classes
October 21: Second block classes

Will face-to-face classes finish at Thanksgiving break?

No, classes will not finish at Thanksgiving break. However, all but a very few courses will move to livestream or online to reduce the spread of COVID after Thanksgiving break.

How are classes being offered for the fall 2020 semester?

How will I know how my course will be delivered?

When you register, you will see each course designated as “face-to-face,” “online,” or “livestream.” Be sure to check the delivery method for each of your courses.

Do I need specialized equipment to access my classes?

Usually no. If you have questions, please see the basic computer requirements for Canvas. We also recommend that you download the Canvas app from the UVU Canvas website.

Will I need to go to the Bookstore to buy my textbooks?

All textbook purchases have been moved online, and you can now order your textbooks via Bookmatch. Your required textbooks for fall 2020 classes will automatically upload so you can easily add them to your online cart for purchase.

Some courses, including labs, may be difficult to take online. How will these courses be offered?

We are making every possible effort to keep labs and certain courses as face-to-face delivery to provide the best possible mode of instruction. When you register for the course, you will see the course delivery method.

If I take an online or livestreamed course, how do I access a webcam?

You purchase a webcam online or through a number of retailers. If you cannot purchase one, webcams are now available to check out from the Fulton Library. Please go to the first floor Circulation Desk during the FL modified hours. To check out a laptop or tablet, you must provide your UVU ID and be a current undergraduate or graduate student registered for classes. This service is only available to actively enrolled students.

What’s the difference between live interactive and livestream?

Live interactive classes are held live but students join via broadcast at a UVU remote site or classroom. Livestream classes are also held live but students join from home or wherever they want.

Do I need a different login to access my online or livestreamed course?

No. You will log in to myUVU with your UV ID and password, then click on the Canvas link.

Technology assistance

What if I do not have a computer to participate in online classes?

If you don’t have a computer, laptops and tablets are now available to check out from the UVU Fulton Library. Only the student signing the agreement is allowed to pick up a laptop or tablet at checkout. Each student is limited to one (1) laptop or tablet to check out at a time. Laptops and tablets are subject to availability.

What do I do if I don’t have access to internet at home and I’m taking an online class?

If you don’t have a reliable internet connection at home, you can use student study areas on campus or visit other places where the internet is publicly available.

What should I do if I need assistance with my computer?

Contact the UVU Service Desk for technical support. Call (801) 863-8888. Help is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

What should I do if I need academic accomodations due to the changes from the pandemic?

Students who need accommodations due to a disability should contact the Office of Accessibility via email at accessibilityservices@uvu.edu or 801-863-8747 located in Losee Center 312.

Examples may include having a mild hearing impairment that you did not previously need an accommodation for but now find it difficult to hear an instructor who is wearing a face mask, or an inability to wear a face covering due a health condition, or difficulty testing at home for your online class due a disability, or concern attending face-to-face classes due to being in a high-risk category.

Masks and face coverings

Will masks be required on campus?

Yes, we are a mask-required university. In accordance with state requirements, masks are required for all students, faculty, and staff when in buildings and classrooms.

Why do I have to wear a mask or alternate facial covering on campus?

UVU is following both CDC guidelines and Governor Herbert’s mandate that facial masks or alternate facial coverings be worn when entering any state facility with shared public spaces. This procedure will continue even if Governor Herbert rescinds the mandate.

When do I have to wear a mask or alternate facial covering on campus?

Everyone must properly wear appropriate facial coverings or masks (must always cover both mouth and nose) when on campus (e.g., in classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, open office spaces, etc.). Facial coverings MUST be worn at any time when near another person. You do not need to wear a mask in a private office when working alone. You may review your facial covering when eating or drinking. Will UVU provide free masks and/or face shields for students?

Disposable mask distribution locations will be available in every UVU building at various entrances August 24 – 28 and August 31 – September 3 from 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. The masks are available to all students, faculty, staff, and other individuals who enter a UVU building and do not have a mask.

Students may also receive one free cloth mask by visiting one of the following locations:

  • Campus Connection, second floor of the Sorensen Student Center (M-F, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
  • Library Circulation Desk (M-F, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Sat., 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sun., 1 – 5 p.m.)
  • Blair Box Office, 6th floor of The Noorda Center (first level) (M-F, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
  • SLWC Control Desk, gym entrance on the second floor of SLWC (M-F, 6 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Sat., 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.)

How many masks can I take?

You may receive a disposable mask anytime you do not have a mask. You may receive one cloth mask per student UVID number.

Who do I talk to if I have questions about acquiring a face mask or alternate facial coverings?

I have a medical condition and can’t wear a face mask or alternate facial covering. Who do I need to talk to?

Students will need to talk to the Office of Accessibility Services. They can be reached at 801-863-8747 or accessibilityservices@uvu.edu. OAS will work with you to find a suitable alternative. 

What if I am harassed, threatened, or bullied (“mask shamed”) by students, faculty, or staff regarding my decision to wear or not wear a mask?

All individuals are required to wear a face covering for safety reasons. If you feel you have been harassed, please contact Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution at (801) 863-5841 or email the Director of Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution, Maren Turnidge, at marent@uvu.edu, or Talatou Abdoulaye at talatoua@uvu.edu.

I refuse to wear a mask or alternate facial covering. What should I do?

Masks or alternate facial coverings are required in order to be inside campus buildings. Please contact the Director of Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution, Maren Turnidge, at marent@uvu.edu, or Talatou Abdoulaye, at talatoua@uvu.edu.

Can I organize a mask-/facial covering-wearing protest (an organized protest against mandated mask-wearing at UVU)?

Organized protests may take any place outside. Inside protests are subject to time, manner, and place restrictions. Refer to Policy 161, Freedom of Speech. You may also contact the Dean of Students' office at (801) 863-8311 or via email at deanofstudents@uvu.edu.

Do I call the police if someone isn’t wearing a mask or facial covering?

Only call the police at (801) 863-5555 in the case of an emergency or in response to physical violence (i.e., forcibly removing another’s mask, grabbing someone, intentionally coughing or sneezing on others, or any other kind of violent emergency).

Will I be able to use UTA to get to the Orem Campus?

UTA continues to offer full services to UVU students and dependents with use of the free UVU UTA Transit Pass. UVX weekday buses run approximately 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. every 10 minutes.  UTA requires all riders and employees to wear face coverings system-wide until further notice.

What if I decline to adhere to social-distancing guidelines in the classroom?

Classroom seating will be arranged to promote social-distancing guidelines and students are encouraged to leave the seating arrangements where they are. Should you decline to adhere to social-distancing guidelines, faculty may ask you to leave the classroom and not return until you have met with the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution.

May I come to campus if I am sick?

First, if you are waiting for test results, you must stay off campus until you know the results of your test. Please complete the COVID-19 reporting form.

Second, if you test positive for COVID-19, you must stay off campus for 14 days after you are tested and have no fever for 24 hours (using no fever-reducing medication) and 24 hours of improved other symptoms. Please complete the COVID-19 reporting form.

Third, if you have any of the following symptoms, do not come to campus:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

What if I feel ill but don’t get tested?

If you feel ill but are unable to get tested, please stay off campus for 14 days beginning with the day the symptoms began. You must also have 24 hours of no fever (using no fever-reducing medications) and 24 hours of improved symptoms.

What if I tested positive for COVID-19?

Please complete the UVU COVID-19 Reporting Form.

Are athletic events cancelled?

Are clubs and student organization events cancelled?

No. Events and activities hosted by clubs, student government, and other student organizations are being offered through virtual means. For more information, visit the upcoming student events/activities website.

Are Noorda or similar performances cancelled for the foreseeable future?
