Money Sign IconCOST of ATTENDANCE

A student's Cost of Attendance (COA) is not a bill. It is an estimated amount of what it will cost a student to go to school, and includes other expenses besides tuition and student fees. COA sets the limit on the total aid you may receive. You may receive federal student aid, Utah Valley University scholarships, scholarships outside of Utah Valley University, and other Estimated Financial Assistance up to your COA.

If you receive assistance beyond your COA, the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office must return federal student aid to the U.S. Department of Education, and return private education loan funds to the lender, until your assistance no longer exceeds your COA.

Per federal regulations and U.S. Department of Education guidance, the Cost of Attendance can include tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, personal (miscellaneous) costs, and minimal transportation costs to and from school (the purchase of a car is excluded from this provision). On a case-by-case basis, the Cost of Attendance might also include: an educational loan fee, dependent care, computer purchase, disability costs, etc. If you are awarded a Direct Loan, your Cost of Attendance will include the educational loan fee. If you would like your Cost of Attendance to include dependent care, computer purchase, disability costs, etc. you may complete the Cost of Attendance Appeal located on the Forms webpage of the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office website.

Cost of Attendance COMPONENTS:

  • Tuition: as notated on the Tuition Tables for the academic year.  Undergraduate and graduate students have different tuition amounts. Resident and Nonresident students also have different tuition amounts.
  • General Student Fees: as notated on the Tuition Tables for the academic year.  Undergraduate and graduate students have different fee amounts.
  • Books and Supplies: is the same average costs for all students based on a survey conducted by the Utah Valley University Institutional Research and Information Department.
  • Minimal Transportation: is the same average costs for all students based on a survey conducted by the Utah Valley University Institutional Research and Information Department.
  • Minimal Miscellaneous Expenses: is the same average costs for all students based on a survey conducted by the Utah Valley University Institutional Research and Information Department.

Can You Increase Your COST of ATTENDANCE?

If you have expenses that are more than the allotted Cost of Attendance amount, you may complete the Cost of Attendance Appeal located on the Forms page of the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office website.
