Program Details

The is a service program that educates children and parents about oral health. Dental cleanings and restorative work is provided to the local children. Students will learn about instrument sterlization, work as a dental hygienist or assistant to the dentists, apply flouride, and help manage the children through the process.

Students learn to work as a team. Dental hygiene students improve skills on more difficult patients than seen in the UVU clinic. The children that are served are in great need for oral health because the lack of dentists in the area. Accomodations are historic hotels in Antiqua and a local hotel with a cook in San Martin. All travel is provided. All meals are provided in San Martin.

Walking tours are provided for cultural appreciation. Students will benefit from leaning about service to the underserved communities, how the dental clinic funtions (you do not need dental experience to go), and learn about oral health for others and themselves. Students are exposed to cultures and perspectives other than their own. I have translater and people who speak Spanish and English.

 

Anticipated Curriculum

*Students are expected to enroll in the following course for this study abroad.

DENT 406G Global Community Health Project
(Admission to the BS Dental Hygiene and UAS*)

*University Advanced Standing - 24 credits completed, GPA 2.0 or higher MAT 1030 and ENGL 2010 or equivalent.

Program Requirements*

Must be 18 years of age at the time of departure

Minimum G.P.A.: 2.0

Physical requirements: Moderate amount of daily walking.

The program fee covers housing, some meals, in-country transportation, international health insurance.

All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee.

Tuition Waivers

Please contact the UVU Benefits Office for more information. In certain instances, tuition waivers may not apply for an international program.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Pell Grants and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to the program, based on eligibility. Applicant must have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (BA 105) and complete all necessary application forms for financial aid.
