Program Details

Chuxiong is known for its ancient history and for having one of the greatest Yi populations in Yunnan. Splendid mountains and gorgeous rivers are features of the city and the prefecture. It is a land of beauty and marvels. There are abundant cultural resources by combining natural beauty and historical cultural relics. The Chuxiong Prefecture Museum, the Zixi Mountain National Forest Park, the Theme Park of Yi ethnic group's Ten-Month Solar Calendar , among many other public parks and sightseeing spots.

Chuxiong is also best known as the excavation site of the earliest Homo sapiens in China and its distinctive landform--Earth Forest. Together with its neighboring counties of Sichuan, most Yi ethnic people of China inhabit this region. Besides Yi , there are many others groups like Han, Usu , Miao, Dai, Hui, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, just to name a few. All of them together present splendid and diverse ethnic cultures.

The city of Chuxiong has a population of almost 300,000 inhabitants. UVU students will have the opportunity to be involved and learn from the 26 diverse ethnic groups as they learn their culture and are able to practice their communicative skills . While at CNU, students will receive direct instruction by trained native educators who are conducting the ir practicum in Chinese as a Second Language .

Students will see China from a different perspective and have a better understanding of China from different scenarios.

Anticipated Curriculum

*Students are expected to take one or two courses while on this study abroad.

CHIN 2010 Intermediate Chinese I
(Prerequisite - CHIN 1020 or equivalent)

CHIN 202G Intermediate Chinese II
(Prerequisite - CHIN 2010 or equivalent)

CHIN 490R Special Topics
(Prerequisite - CHIN 3050, UAS*)

*University Advanced Standing - 24 credits completed, GPA 2.0 or higher MAT 1030 and ENGL 2010 or equivalent.

Program Requirements*

Must be 18 years of age at the time of departure

Minimum G.P.A.: 2.5

Prerequisite Course(s): CHIN 1010

Physical requirements: Significant daily walking to and from classes, at museums, at cultural and historical sites, etc. Climbing the Great Wall, Stone Forest, Ethic Village, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Shanghai Bund, Dali tour, etc.

Estimated Program Fee*

Fee covers Chinese visa, housing, in-country transportation, educational materials at Chuxiong Normal University, excursions (including a boat ride with dinner on the Shanghai Bay, the Forbidden City, and museum entrance fees), all meals in Shanghai and Beijing, international insurance.


*This program receives funding from the Office of Engaged Learning Chinese Initiative Funds to subsidize program cost.. A merchant fee of 3% of the program fee will be added to your program cost at checkout for merchant fees.

All students are required to pay a $75 application fee for all Study Abroad programs.

Tuition Waivers

Please contact the UVU Benefits Office for more information. In certain instances, tuition waivers may not apply for an international program.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Pell Grants and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to the program, based on eligibility. Applicant must have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (BA 105) and complete all necessary application forms for financial aid.
