Program Details



Students in the College of Health and Public Services (CJ/Law Enforcement, Emergency Services, Forensic Science, Public and Community Health, and Nursing) have an exciting opportunity for a study abroad and international collaboration. Students will be traveling to Christchurch, Canterbury in New Zealand to study the effects of the three devastating earthquakes of 2010, 2011, 2016. We have room for 20+ students on a first-come-first–served basis.

There will also be field trips and a recreational trip to beautiful Queenstown on the weekend included in the program fee. Personal expenses and activities will be the student's responsibility. The faculty, staff and other personnel from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch Public Services and Otago Emergency Management will provide instruction along with faculty from UVU .

  • Christchurch (Canterbury)

Although priority is given to College of Health and Public Services majors, all other majors will be considered.

Anticipated Curriculum

ESMG 489R Special Topics in Emergency Management
(Prerequisite - *University Advanced Standing)


MPS 679R Special Topics in Public Service (Graduate Course)
(Prerequisite - Acceptance into the Masters of Public Services Program)

*University Advanced Standing - 24 credits completed, GPA 2.0 or higher MAT 1030 and ENGL 2010 or equivalent.

Program Requirements*

 Must be 18 years of age at the time of departure

Minimum G.P.A.: 2.0

Physical requirements: Significant amount of walking* and long flight times.

Estimated Program Fee*

Fee covers foreign institution costs, in-country transportation, lodging, some meals, some excursions.


*This cost is tentative and based on the current exchange rate and program plans. This cost may be updated due to exchange-rate fluctuations or program changes. Fee may drop depending on the number of students that enroll.

Graduate students pay standard graduate tuition rates
Airfare (approx $1300)
Meals not included with housing (approx $100)
Discretionary spending (approx $500)
Passport (approx $135)
All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee.

Note: Please be aware that additional costs may be incured due to unexpected events. Travelers are responsible for these addtional costs.

Financial Aid & Employee Tuition Waivers

Pell Grants and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to the program, based on eligibility. Speak to a Financial Aid Advisor for more information (BA 105). 

Employee Tuition Waivers (for dependents of UVU employees) may be used for Study Abroad tuition. See Human Resources for more information.
